Leave a standing dead trunk near a house?

A school class was walking through a wooded area on a used footpath. It was a windy day and some neglect left a natural spur unnoticed for too long. A child was taken, right in front of the class.
A similar thing happened here last year. A man and his granddaughter were walking in the woods. He heard it crack and yelled to run. They each went separate ways and the granddaughter stopped and turned around to follow her grandpa when it hit her.

My grandpa has a trail through his woods from loggers years ago, that he's maintained. He has a pretty low tolerance for any trees that are in decline near the trail. It's too easy for a tractor to bump one and knock the top out.
