Leaning Western Redcedar

Location
Gibsons BC
We may have this job to remove this cedar tree, hauling everything away. I'm not sure what the most efficient way to approach it will be. I suppose we'll run a speedline or trolley type system to get rid of the brush but I'm not sure what we'll do with the wood...square rigging on a leaner like this won't be much fun I'd imagine. But neither will packing it up the stairs off the beach. Maybe we'll get a barge, I don't know, have a look!

cool location Gord. dont forget to take some shots of it coming down if you can. Looks like fun!

how far out would you have to anchor the barge to keep it from grounding? might make a shallow angle for your speedline.

How about this option: Get the brush out using standard techniques up through the yard and then drop the log onto the beach, cut it into lengths you can get into the water and float them out to a boat ramp. You could possibly use the boat with a mechanical advantage system to pull the pieces to the water with. If you tie all the pieces together they would float like a mother duck and all her chicks.

That's my summer house and I don't want that tree removed.

Great! I wasn't looking forward to it anyways.

Hey Gord, Is the job gonna happen?

That's an awesome tree! I'd crown reduce and thin it, maybe install an anchor from it to one of those firs at 20 feet off the ground or so....like 2 4 ton Cobra systems....

If you are at Gibson can't you get Relic's old boat and haul the dam log away. I am sure that is how the Beachcombers would have done it.

We did this job a while ago so I thought I'd finally post these pics.

Just starting in this pic.

Most of the lower brush off. Cedars are terribly tangly making the rigging a pain using a zipline set up.

Done for the day. We actually spent over two days on this tree, slow going with all the little limbs on the speedline, even bouquet style, and then a good drag to the truck. We split and hauled all the wood as well. Used a little Muck-truck to get the wood up the hill.

Video of zipping some limbs down.
