Laser pointers and height tools

I looked at some old threads but, I thought I would start a new one. I’m finding a need for a laser pointer since I’m doing more pruning lately. Today, I was trying to tell a potential client which limb and branch (conifer) needed pruned. Secondly, I use the stick method and step it off to get the height. I usually am only concerned about drop zone. Today I was discussing a view from a yard regarding tree height and species. It would have been nice to have a quick method. Is there a combination tool for pointing and height estimation? What do y’all use for pointing and estimating.

I got a laser from arbsession, works great. Nikon forestry rangefinder works well for height/distance. I use it to see if a crane will reach mostly.

I used a generic green laser pointer from Amazon. Came in a two pack, rechargeable, and works great for like $20 bucks. I'll try to find the link.

I mostly got mine for shooting measurements for crane set ups. The crane co. I contract charges a mobilization fee the surpasses the cost of the device….. so one fuck up I could buy 1.5 of these rangefinders….

It doesn't do the pointing, but the Arboreal Tree app is looking very good for measuring height, width, canopy height, and recording results. It uses Augmented Reality to do the figuring. I'm getting a one-year purchase to see how much I use it (about $6), then will pay for permanent use. The Arboreal Forestry app is amazing but I don't need the extra ability to measure, ID, and map my trees.

Yea, with a tape and some kind of a jig to ensure your measuring the angle accurately, that would be quick and accurate enough for most purposes. You can always round cautiously.

You can measure with the butt below horizontal and top above horizontal, as well as both above or both below.

Works on hills and flat ground.

I'm a math cripple so I just use the Forestry Pro from Nikon. I was pretty good until I went to progressive lenses now everything looks intimidatingly taller. Sucks. really messing me up.

My tbi messed up my vision and math skills. I didn't know progressive lenses do that too.

The Arboreal Tree app does basic inventory tasks. Here's an evaluation on youtube: "Excellent app! I am using it as crucial tool in the urban forest management of our 1500 HOA trees. I can measure at a rate of about 1 minute per tree. The data is downloaded later as a CSV spreadsheet compatible file for easily updating inventory data. Our HOA is volunteer run on a tight budget so tools like this really help."
The Arboreal Forest app is much more powerful. I'm not really sure of its benefit. Here's a "how to use app" video (about 3 minutes long).

Sorry you have that issue. I've read a ton about TBI. Interesting what some of the alternative treatments are doing for folks. Interesting it effected your math also. The math isn't from the lenses. It's from being a dipshit and not paying attention in school then getting so behind I never recovered and still count on my fingers.

I was in college retaking calculus when it happened. It went from easy to barely passing. Marked difference. It's completely shifted my ability to do math, partially from memory loss. TBI's are weird for sure. Linked up with some vets who have had good success in recovering which has helped. Supportive wife too.

There's so much out there. Some really interesting stuff using microcurrent and stuff like that. Anything specific you're looking for? There's some brain mapping thats being done with the ability to specifically treat the effective area with therapy (various sales) microcurrent, detox/supplementation. Stimulation therapy, resonance, vibration, light, and some TCM. Just depends on your flavor but it seems the brain scan is the entry to find the specific path to take.
