Axle weight ratings used to be ( its been a while since I owned mine) the same 450/550. They were both 13,500# rear and 6 or 7 K fronts. What changes the tow haul cap was the spring ratings, frame channel sizes, and most improtantly- gear ratios. 550's came 4:88. I believe 450's wer 4:56 or 4:30. That is huge. My last 550 I ordered with heavy haul/ tow package. Most dealers dont know that option code existed. It has a GVWR of 19K#, a GCWR of 33#K. Mechanically it is a bigger radiatior, trans cooler, and oil pans on motor n trans. 26 qt oil changes lol.
Not trying to sidetrack the thread but in my experience the only Ford F series worth owning has a 7.3 motor. Both of mine (04&06) were complete POS's i purchased brand new and spent more time at the dealer than working.
