Large Oak Removal

thanks dave. I have been climbing 2 solid years now and your right, that isn't much time but the guy who taught me is an extremely good teacher and rigger. He built a solid foundation and I took it from there

I give a lot of credit to this website for where I am today. It hooked me up with the right people and I picked there brains about everything, heck I still do to this day.

It seems in this industry that as long as your eyes and ears are open you can learn something new everyday and I have done just that

No problems regs always open to criticism but always in small doses.

Think of it as advice rather than critisism, cause is sounds like you've been given the brunt of responsibilities at that company....so here's a little more regarding your helmet - I seem to remember a while back you writing how you dont always wear your hat anyway, especially if the weathers hot, I have a good memory for stuff like that
wink.gif
but excuse me if Ive mistaken you for someone else. That helmet is just as critical as your other PPE, and is for your protection. I really dont want to read about you in 'Awakenings' i.e. MARC POWELL KILLED YESTERDAY....no thankyou. I hate them too, but you've only gotta be unlucky once, and it does happen if you stick around long enough.

Re: the GRCS [ QUOTE ]
I also liked to use it to take the stretch out of the line for critical cuts when those extra inchs mattered.

[/ QUOTE ] Well done, you can really build on that technique....now learn to balance your loads and try lowering your rigging points for bigger sections where safe to do so. Before you know it, you'll have trees like that one de-limbed on less than a tank of fuel! Dont waste those cuts

Best of luck

thanks for the advice friend. You do have a good memory as far as the helmet is concerned but have since changed my ways. I felt like my ground guy could use the hat more so than myself on that particular day and have since over stocked our trucks with spares in the event something like that happens again

I ordered a spyder leg balencer the other day. I usually try to use my best judgement when trying to equal out a load. Ive gotten quite good at it but find it rather fearful of a practice because if I'm wrong who knows what will happen

Again thanks for the advice and your time

[/ QUOTE ] It'll tip one way or the other, thats all. But the nearer you are to the P.O.B, the slower it will tip. So if your guys are anywhere near efficient on the ropes they'll be ready to grab it by that stage anyway.

persevere till you have it mastered, well worth it....especially as you progress to craning. Gradually it'll become really obvious, you'll just know where to attach.
Balancers are great but 95% of the time you don't need them, so why complicate matters when otherwise the actual skill is really not that difficult to learn! However, if you learn to rely too much on balancers etc at your stage of development, you'll end up with a somewhat diluted instinct/confidence for balance its self, when really, this should be second nature to every treeguy/gal. Remember, practice makes....

LOL, did you think I was patronizing you man, come on, I don’t have that kind of time to waste. 2 or 20 years, your not being judged, I’m just picking up on your content. I know guys who have been working trees for 30 years and they are still $hit after all that time in the game!

I responded by saying it’ll tip one way or another, that’s all. My intention was to suggest that its not always that critical, especially if you’re experimenting high up in the tree away from potential obstacles. The advice is sound and genuine.

FWIW, I get hired by tree companies not because I race around a tree like a chimpanzee or anything like that, quite the opposite in fact….rather because I can spot and implement the opportunities that will cut a job in half. Learn the art not just the science, take it or leave it

Jesus! you guys gotta be the ugliest tree crew ever! One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest or what?! How did you get Forest Whitaker to work for your crew anyway and why isn't he sittin near the rest of you? Personally I think He's got the right idea, you guys look like lunatic asylum escapees.

That house you were working near looked amazing, how much was it worth?

Nice job on the takedown.

that house was 2million, forest whitaker wasnt sitting next to us because we in jersey still believe in segrigation, whites only kinda thing and as the only brother on the crew he didnt feel comfortable with a bunch of crackers that had a saw that big

oh, and we were too ugly

btw if you respond to this you will get your coveted 1000th post

"I would have gone with a larger mouth but our larger saw was not cutting well and I'm the only one who knows how to sharpen."

The company gets paid 12G for taking out a tree and sends an entire crew of guys (save one) that can't even sharpen a saw???......

I'm a girl and I can do it.

what's being a girl have to do with anything? I like the fact that as a man if I were to make a statement like that I'd be verbally beaten to death buts its okay for women to put themselves down.

What's the amount of money on the job have to do about one guy knowing how to sharpen? (by the way now the talley is up to 3 since that job)

Great criticism. I can build a lot off of that post

Even if the guys had sharpened the bigger saw I still would have gone with the smaller saw because of the weight and I wouldn't want to wait around the whole time. I'm all about using the right tools for the right situation but I'm also all about getting the job done with the tools at hand

Poor Forest, at least he got the oscar for 'The Last King of Scotland'. Great film, gruesome ending.

Any group can run -THEMSELVES- down ;men, women, different races, anybody. I am girl, I know my limits compared to the guys. I can't do what they can--except for saw sharping.

By the way...here in the AR Delta we don't get paid very much for anything. We just took a 4' X 85' Oak out (so close
was it to buildings that a good part of it was hanging over a two story house) for a great big $1,200.00. It took one man and a skinny little girl (me) 10 days. I kept the saws sharp...

Now I will praise you: I enjoyed your pictures and story very very very much. Thank you.

Nice removal. Note: If OSHA should happen to get a hold of those pictures, they can levy a fine for PPE violations just from the pictures.

sounds like a blast, tell them to come n get it, but seriously, thanks for your kind words, if there was a better understanding of why i was dressed the way i was i feel there would be a more sympathetic ear, but, im never one to explain my actions, not when it could get someone else in trouble
