holy snappers what trees are you climbing look at that thing its like a climbing line for midgets our biggest tree in ottawas like 110 ft we got some small trees we only use like 6 ft landyards

cool yea i was thinking of the same idea but i might daisy chain mine rather than use a small bag

I think the more common homemade lanyard puts the rated micropulley right on the carabiner between the legs of the hitch. That way if the hitch fails the stopper knot will stop at the pulley. Or I think a few people use the eye of a swivel-carabiner instead of a pulley.

We don't get trees that wide in Denmark either.
I normally climb with a 3,5 meter (11,5 feet) rope lanyard.
That can do most trees. It is so annoying, when it gets too long.
I have just bought a 3 meter steel lanyard, for taking down spruces. To be honest, I really don't like it. Though it is a very flexible steel lanyard, it is a pain in the @rse, compared to a "real" rope lanyard.

I like using mine as a second climb line. Its 30 ft of P.I. with a tenex eye and eye and micro pully. I keep It daisy chained but the bag sounds so much better!! What kind of bag do you use Pete Mctree? Throwline pouch??

I also climb with 30ft of lanyard. It is very helpful when needing to do short redirects. I use a bag. It is nice but it can be a bit cumbersome at times, getting stuck in crotches and flopping around a bit.

This is my current setup and it's sooo smooth. It can be used as a second line too.
The lanyard is about 30' long but I daisy chain the extra.
The sewn eye is NOT life support. All I did was remove a portion of the core then stitched the eye so that I can keep things tidy.

i do the same as mctree only i use a standard captive eye krab n 18' of 10mm beeline i use a throwline bag n stuff a small throw bag in it n a phone n a bandage. its very very neat and attaches to my leg strap no bouncing and no forgetting to undo the daisy chain on a long redirect

It all depends on preferance and climbing style. Just a little input for the budget worthy climber. I started using this technique for this reason but it is so versatile and simple I wont change.
Use a 12(min) foot chunk of cordage your choice. One eye and eye prussik with three carabiners. tie a french prussik (No Braid) to the line with a #3 boat snap between each eye. The snap provides as a micro-pulley except you can switch the direction of pull or unclip it. Allowing for use as an alternate lanyard technique,2nd tie in,... great in those tight spots.
Versatile and cheap!!!
Can get you an attatchment later if you like.
