... Nice design but lacking in function...

Good to know Adrian. I love buying gear, but I also have lots of stuff that is well designs/built and doesn't get used because it lacks in function. You saved me some money kid!

Jamin, I have similar problems with my cmi foot ascender but not so severe that I would warrent me to replace it (and that says a lot)

True Mark. I won't retire them for that either, just a draw back. But, one thing that leaves them in the gear bag is this. The adjustable straps on the CMI foot ascenders are getting super fuzzy because of the toothed spring loaded cam. It really sucks fighting those things to get on and off.

You have this problem?

Re: Kong\'s foot ascender

I bought my Pantin the first day they were available many years ago. It is hardly a lemon in my climbing kit!

When the CMI came out I bought a lefty to give a go. I don't care for it one bit! Too big, it gets in the way when I climb, the Pantin will stay on my foot even when I go to lunch.

Re: Kong\'s foot ascender

Jamin, I had the same issue with the CMI as well as the straps were ripping along the sharp edges of the cam. That one is retired and I'm pissed. 60 bucks a 3 months later... not worth it.

Re: Kong\'s foot ascender

Jamin, I never completely undo my foot ascender straps. I loosen them up and step into it. At first I used to take the strap off then put it back through but when I started to run into the problem you have I decided to start stepping into it instead.

Human crane was climbing with me the other day and I let him use the cmi foot ascender. He tried to step into it but his feet are way bigger then mine. He took his boot off, placed the ascender where he wanted it on his boot, tightened it and then put his boot back on. Seemed to work out pretty good. I'm going to buy human crane a pantin as a suprise gift so I'm interested to see how the two compair.

Re: Kong\'s foot ascender

i had to sew the bottom strap on my pantin it kept getting loose. the new kong hand ascender rocks to me i think it would be good for single line with a pantin and a croll. inch worm stye with both feet stacked and hands stacked like foot locking.

Re: Kong\'s foot ascender

Pantin rocks!!
If you keep your foot centered under your a**, there's no problem with the Pantin.
Also, if combined with a self-tended hitch (w/pulley), you simply walk up the rope. No other gear is necessary.
I also add a CMI hand ascender on top for redundancy, but it's not necessary.
If you add a foot loop strap attached to the upper hand ascender, then the system resembles Sherrill's Tree Frog system.
IMHO there's hardly a quicker system with such little amount of hardware(that is with only the pantin and the self tended hitch), and once in the canopy you simply kick off the pantin and go to work.
It hardly gets better than that! --unless you're quick at foot lockin of course.
