Kong Dual Ascender

Glen,

This method of 2 ascenders is mainly something I created for the competition only. However, it is still a valid idea. I don't really use it at work though. I have other means I prefer.

The point about having to go to the top to get them is not really an issue for me. I usually go to the top when pruning anyway. You asked what to do if one ascender fails? Well, it's a backup. That's the point of a backup. If it fails you still have the primary set of ascenders, so no accident is likely to occur. Besides, it's not very probable that you would notice if one of the top cams failed while you were ascending anyway. The only way an accident could really happen with this technique is if the same side of each ascender failed during a single climb.

There was extensive discussion on this topic over at arborist[sic]site a couple of years ago:

Gord showed it photographically with the exception being he'd used web strap instead of prussic cord: http://new.arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=17594&page=7#post217387

A sketch from me: http://new.arboristsite.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=18339&d=1100103751

Followed by a couple of actual photos http://new.arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=17594&page=8#post219177 and in the few posts following that, NickFromWI documented his personal contribution.

I think Dan's was very near that but somewhat different in the details (perhaps it was a bit more complicated -- I've slept since then...).

By the way, I've forgotten to thank you for the helmet stickers so want to do that now.

What do you guys win when you become the world champion tree-climbers? I just saw a piece on one of the network Sunday morning shows about the concrete convention in Las Vegas. The champion brick layer won five grand cash and a new pickup truck. And they're "just" bricklayers :)

i make a Schwab (chosen so both tails on 1 side)above Kong, then place Kong on single line, with Schwab/Safety on top and it's long legs to ride on same krab at base of Kong. then add more turns and make alteration of self tending Sailor's Gripping Hitch out of cord, at changeover to DdRT, that uses slack below Schwab up pretty much.

i have had the prussik and Kleimheist knots loosen on me when im ascending on the dual hand, however the Nelson hitch has yet to slip and does not loosen as i footlock. here is a picture.

This rig has done me well, i suggest you try at low level climbing.

Didn't TreeCo come ups with a great configuration for backup when using the Kong dual ascender?

Yes, I did come up with the nelson hitch one evening. Remember it is un-tested.

Proceed at your own risk!

i have tried it, bouncing my weight on it and it seems to hold pretty well. ive tried to mimic an ascender failure in my spare timeand it has worked rather well... that is the hitch has held strong, but i agree with treeco, use at your own risk.
