This method of 2 ascenders is mainly something I created for the competition only. However, it is still a valid idea. I don't really use it at work though. I have other means I prefer.
The point about having to go to the top to get them is not really an issue for me. I usually go to the top when pruning anyway. You asked what to do if one ascender fails? Well, it's a backup. That's the point of a backup. If it fails you still have the primary set of ascenders, so no accident is likely to occur. Besides, it's not very probable that you would notice if one of the top cams failed while you were ascending anyway. The only way an accident could really happen with this technique is if the same side of each ascender failed during a single climb.
