Kong double ascenders

I use the Kongs every day, and I do get nervous about failure. Seems to me that using the rock exotica footlocker would be a nice backup, although a bit pricey. Then, you have two peices of hardware to deal with once aloft. But hey, saftey first, right?

The item in the attachment in the post above is not a Footlocker--it is a Dualcender.

The Dualcender can be used as a backup for the Kongs, but the Footlocker cannot .

The Footlocker itself (see attachment in this post, from Sherrill’s 2003 catalogue) was a spin-off of the Microcender. The Footlocker has two cams set right next to each other in the same frame so that the Footlocker could be placed on the two legs of the line that arborists typically use to ascend into a tree. A single carabiner was placed through both cams and the climber’s tether was attached to the single carabiner. The problem was that if the climber pulled down on either one of the two legs of line, both of the cams would release, thus sending the climber down.

The Dualcender also has two side-by-side cams, but there is a single piece of webbing connected to both of the cams (see the attachment in the above post). The climber’s carabiner is attached to the bottom of the webbing. This allows the climber’s weight to ‘float’ between both cams. If either leg of the rope is pulled the one cam that is on that leg of rope will be released, but the other cam will remain engaged.

This is a very important difference between the two devices, particularly if someone intends to use one as a backup for the Kongs. The Dualcender will work very well, but the Footlocker will not work at all. If a climber is using the Footlocker as a backup for the Kongs and the Kongs fail, then the climber will go to the ground.

The Dualcender can be used as a backup for the Kongs, but the Footlocker cannot be used as a backup for the Kongs.

Thanks for that important clarification..! Maybe that post should be deleted in case someone reads it without following the rest of this thread???
