Kevin Smith & Graeme Mcmahon

Thanks Tom for putting this up. When I first joined the buzz, I made a point of putting all of my "open" presentations out there. I stopped doing that for everything after seeing a lack of interest other than "why don't you do one near me". I owe you a note, I know!

I would love to see Dr. Smith give a presentation. If nothing else, just to see how badly I pronounce taxonomic names.

"That there, is a Red Mulberry. His name is Morris Rubadub."

I'll take that as support, but I get corrected on my pronounciation on scientific names when I'm abroad...unless I'm paying extreme attention. And then I get flack back home. For example, the Latin "A" is always pronounced as the "a" in "father". So if I refer to "Acer" or "Abies", that needs a short vowel rather than the long vowel we Americans usually use. Oh well, I've learned to have a thick skin after provoking chuckles while working with field botanists in Siberia and the former Yugoslavia. I'm sure they thought I was the equivalent of Jed Clampett or Ralph Cramden! Americans have trouble publicly giving the genus name for pine in correct Latin pronounciation. Hint: it rhymes with "genus". There is no short I-sound in Latin, at least not the way we speak it. Now I'm sure I'll be corrected by some classic scholar out there. Like I say, I need a thick skin.

I'm going to miss the workshop :(

Instead I'll be on my way to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area for the annual winter camping trip. Choosing between the two was really hard :(

What's your entry point and proposed route? Gonna be sloppy if this weather keeps on the current trajectory...

Now I'm sure I'll be corrected by some classic scholar out there.

I wouldn't sweat it, too much. The closest thing we have to classic scholars on here probably learned their Latin from a "Hooked On Phonics" class down at the Adult Learning Center while studying for their GED test. :risas:

The only way I'm going to get any of it right is if they make a special episode of Sesame Street dealing with the subject.
