just suppose....(stihl guys only)

I run 201t
241 groundie
362
441
Stihl pole saw.

I guess I would add a 661 since everyone loves a biggie. 441 is my biggest and I have a 36" bar for it for big stuff. Otherwise it has a 24 "

Wow, you guys do a lot of modifying. I have not dabbled in that and am very curious.

Can someone please explain the terms and what they do??

Modded....
Ported....
Muffler mod....
Timing advance....

201t 16" bar
201t 16" bar
461 20" bar
461 20" bar
461 28" bar
880 47" bar

Everyone complains about me not having any mid size saws, I have 2 362's but they have no power compared to 460's. My ground guys prefer 460's with 20" bars. I did just buy my guys a 550xp cuz of the weight with an 18" for ground as well. I run all stihl's for tree work, and at the wood pile we run 3 372xp's, 394, 395, and 2 3120's. The husky's like the wood pile.

200T 16"
200T 16"
271 20"
HUSKY 372XP 32" aluminum bar, full wrap handle
660 36 "and 42" full wrap handle
880 59"
I must add a 193t for the groundies and light pruning. 200t s for climbing only. 271 for light chunking and ground. 372xp for climbing /big wood chunking only. 660 big wood on the ground and occasional big cut in the tree and pilot cuts for the 880. 880 for final cuts and huge wood. This quiver covers all the ranges. I am a stihl guy but my 372 has been with me for 12 years + and with the light weight bar and full wrap handle it handles great in the tree. All of my saws are stock and with a good maintenance routine I have very few problems.

Pilot cut Scott? Cmon now...for an 880. Brad must be right as usual for stock 880's. Never heard of a saw needing a pilot cut lol. Nice saw collection tho.

Anyhoo...I will never own another saw that doesn't have Brad's basic mod...and for $50. you will be amazed. Been running the basic modded 261 for a bit and it is badass. Getting my 241 modded straight from Brad in next couple of days and when I do I am sending my 461 off to the doctor too.

Ps ...if you leave that 59 incher on the 880 it will sit on the shelf way longer than it should.

Never heard of anyone making "pilot cuts"...waste of time akin to re loading a log on the truck you struggled to get up there the first time.

I can not imagine wasting that kind of time on a job.

Kapish?

I don't get what you are saying although you added something and it will not quote now.

Some areas just don't have the big trees we have here. And some areas that have the big trees...some guys just aren't up to doing the big ones. And once you successfully remove many big ones, you become the go to guy on the biggies.

A 660 is just plain not a big enough saw for some of the work we do and that is why they make the big power head

For a 3 or 4 person crew with at least 2 climbers and a mix of job types:
150 tce
201 tcm
261 cmq
441 cmq with a 20" bar that never gets within 4' of the ground on pain of death
241 cm to keep my climbing saws out of the dirt and FNG limbs attached
461 or 661 cm depending on pruning:removal ratio

Then a sticksaw asap, possibly before the 241, and the 461/661 that's not in the inventory.

I should have clarified the pilot cut. It is not a power issue but rather when making a stump cut when the saw is horizontal, with a 59" bar the flex in the bar will throw the chain off if you do not have the cut started. Also I find it easier to start the face cut and the back cut with a smaller saw. Takes 15 seconds to switch saws. I have that 880 off the shelf 2-3 times a month.

P.S. Maybe pilot cut is the wrong term. You know what I mean ,right. What would be a better term? What would be a better technique to start big cuts? Been fine tuning my collection for years. Us tree guys sure get wrapped up in our saws. Makes my wife crazy she thinks I am excessive. She doesn't get it.

We used to always run a 2 man handle on the huge bars. Never see them anymore. But you can still use the ones on the porti chainsaw mills if you wanted one. Nice in that the 2nd man can apply bar oil...esp. on stump cuts.

880 goes out 2 or 3 times a month...what a shame. Throw a 41" on there and get the Brad mod and see how much quicker wood gets cut up.

I hear you. I am from northern California. Did tree work there for 20 years. Had a 090 but sold it. Moved to Colorado 2 years ago. My 660 handles 42" and under no problem. 880 2-3 times a month here is getting after it. I would like to see a few more revs from the 880. What mods do you recommend? What is the Brad mod?

880s are severely rev limited from the factory. I use a 088 coil on the 880s with the aluminum muffler and a 361 coil on those with the stainless muffler. They changed the case such that they require different coils. I also mod the muffler, advance the ignition timing, degree and port the cylinder, bump compression, remove the rev limiters on the carb, and re-tune.

Newer model MS880 with stainless muffler

Older model MS880 with cast aluminum muffler.

Thanks for your time. Will these mods effect reliability and piston life? What is the cost?

I put a rescue starter handle on my 088 too....so much easier to start.
