Just a little cottonwood for your viewing pleasure

Re: Fun felling/removal job from a month ago.....

Dragging the butts from across a ditch, onto the turf, where we could reach them with the bobcat...

For the anchor part of the 5-1 mechanical advantage that we used to yard the logs out of the wild area (ditch as well) we set the bobcat and pickup truck up in tandem, joined via a chain, and with chocked tires. The chip truck did the pulling. Worked like a charm!

Dave speedlining brush from the only tree that had to be climbed all the way to the top..to get it to where it could be chipped. While Jerry yards logs from off the slope.

Chipper winch was used to tension the speedline. Down lower in the tree, it was used to actually lift the branches up and zipping them out of the hole, by straightening the slacked speedline.

Re: Fun felling/removal job from a month ago.....

Roger-

On that picture of the cottonwood falling I noticed that it was just going to land on that nice expensive line. I have a trick to prevent possible damage to the line and having to deal with it getting stuck under the tree. I will tie a second rope to the middle of the pull rope and have someone stand well off to the side holding that line. When the tree starts to go over I have them pull on the second line which keeps the expensive pull rope out of the drop zone. Nothing like finding your pull line stabbed a few feet into the ground by a big stub. Or worse, when you can't get the pull line out before processing and one of the crew hits it with a saw.

Looked like a fun job. I've got a few monster cottonwoods coming up. Three 36"+ DBH cottonwoods previously topped at 60 feet that I have to bring down. One of those is about 10 feet from a building. Thankfully the new growth isn't too big at this point. One more that wasn't topped is at least 100'. Still working up a price on those. One of the owners of the property has a brother who owns multiple cranes including some big boys so he might bring one of those out to help on it. That will save them some $.

Re: Fun felling/removal job from a month ago.....

Thanks for the tip, Ryan. We'll try to fling the rope sideways when it goes slack. Or, on an easy fell, pull from a 10-20 degrees off from the intended lay......

Only 100 feet? Sounds like Portland is in the desert...

Did I post about the biggie I felled Wednesday? It was easy 150 and 42-44", Faced it wrong, too far off from the lay, so it was hard to crank over with GRCS ( a tiny bit of back weight) but we got it, with me pounding wedges. Cool thing was, it hit a young c'wood head on, bent it over then shattered it as it was on its way down. Broke it at 25 feet and at least 16". Reckon that one was 110-120' and maybe 20 years old....Saved me some time in felling that one.....

I'm headed back out there and will count some growth rings.
