Joke

Tree, I just meant to say that you always give people someting to think about. A joke is a joke. If I got a nickel for every Polish joke I have heard, I would have been able to retire years ago. Everyone should take it for what its worth, a moment to laugh a bit in a tightly wrapped society.

As for calling people a drunk or a treehugger, we don't need to get personal with attacks. Everyone has an opinion, but lets make sure to remember we are all people down deep. Enough said. Lets go play some poker. /forum/images/graemlins/furious3.gif /forum/images/graemlins/peace.gif

I have no intention to say I "goofed", because I have not. I have stood my ground...

Yes you have, but you're standing on quicksand and you don't even realize it.

Thanks for showing your true colors. I guess I was mistaken that you might have had some redeeeming human qualities.

so a guy walks into a doctors office all wrapped up in saran wrap....he says, doc I think I have a problem....the doctor says.." yes I think you do too..first of all, I clearly see your (you're) nuts !!!!!

I thought I'd kill the thread with another joke...hope it made someone laugh...

It's probably still not worth the effort yet, but I'll weigh in on this now anyway.

Sure, the joke shows some bad taste, but that's the worst that can be said about it. It's most certainly not a racial slur. Obviously, the subject of the joke is an American Negro. So what. It could have been a white man from the back hills of Kentucky, and it would not have been any more or less "racial" then, either.

I grew up in southern Wisconsin and "Polack jokes" were the norm. Here in central Indiana, many of the same jokes are told but the imbeciles are instead Kentuckians. In Switzerland they would be Austrians. It's the same all over the world.

Here's one of my favorites that I've not heard any other way yet:

A Polish girl goes into a bank with a bag full of quarters. She approaches a teller and he asks her how he can be of assistance. She requests he put the contents of the bag into the coin-counter and deposit the amount in the account she shares with her sister. He says "My, that's an awful lot of quarters; did you hoard them all yourself?" She replies "No, my sister whored half of them!"

I agree with Kieth, and I think it takes a way thicker skin to point out to someone their racist actions than it does to tell a racist joke about a group of people that aren't around.

I have always figured that if I didn't feel comfortable telling a race related joke to a person I had just met of that race, then I didn't really need to be telling that joke.

That saran wrap joke is an old one, but it still made me laugh!

A little common sense on the internet. Don't tell jokes without knowing who is in your audience. My opinion? Racist jokes are tasteless and way outdated. Heck even that moron in the White House is smart enough not to tell racist jokes. At least not in public.

Glen,

I get your point. I've probably heard most of the polack jokes you know, but they were always about aggies. In fact, the best aggie jokes come from Texas A&M, and the aggies enjoy them as much as anyone (maybe more). They also tell teasip jokes (their name for Texas Longhorns), which I do not find offensive. Example: Why did they put I-35 all the way through the middle of the state? So teasips can find their way to school.

The difference, as I see it, is that aggies and polacks and teasips didn't undergo a century or so of slavery. I don't know of any aggies or teasips or polacks who got lynched for looking at someone wrong. I doubt if any aggies or teasips or polacks ever had to ride in the back of the bus or eat in the kitchen because they were aggies or teasips or polacks. If I ever find myself in a roomful of hostile aggies and the teasip jokes start to turn ugly and scary, I can flash a gig-em ags sign and exit quietly without anyone noticing.

Would someone be overly sensitive to be offended by this joke? Maybe--I still don't think so, but maybe. But surely it's not hard to understand that black folks might be wary of white folks, given our history. And if white folks continue to just smile and shake our heads when we hear racist remarks, we won't give them much reason to give us the benefit of the doubt. As a white person, I am ashamed of the use of ebonics by other whites for comic effect, and I'm not going to let someone get away with it without pointing out the problem. If that spoils the fun for someone, it's about time.

Keith

I didn't see any problem with it.

Like someone else said, "show me a joke involving people that ain't offensive to SOMEONE" Dang right. And we're not in elementary school anymore; so our jokes can have sexual content, racism, gore, and all that good stuff.

Babberney. That joke didn't state that the subjects were from an African American decent. I think you have a sereo type for "blacks" and think they they must talk like this. How dare you. /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I couldn't give a crap if a joke is about my type of race, sex or religion. Southpark makes fun of Catholics all the time and I still think those jokes are kinda funny. And I'm a practicing Catholic and feel good about my faith.

You go see a black comedian and they are cracking on whites all the time. I don't care. If I go to a small comedy place in Baltimore, we might be the only couple in there that's white, and they will rail on me -again, so freakin what.

I have a Latin friend, and she makes fun of me being a gringo and I make spic jokes at her. Big deal.

One of my best friends is Chinese and we do the same, we can make jokes about our races as well.

Shoot, I think WHITE GUILT is more of a problem now-a-days. And people like you (the 3 or so that thought Tree DR was wrong) are the ones that keep it growing. OH NO! A joke that might suggest a black person. OH NOOOOOOOOOOOO! /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Yes, it does seem like liberals, tree huggers, racism watchers, anti-gun, pro-choice, anti-firework, anti-hunting often go together and are the same people. Often, not always. (I could have come up with a better list, but that would take more time). yeah, that list pretty well sucked...

Tree DR., I think you made some good points. And no wonder you got hot after being called a racist. I wouldn't let it bother you though. And others that agree with you, ain't saying it on here cause they don't want to be grouped in the racist group either. Everyone is so dang scared.

Now, cant wee, cant wee, cant wee all gist git along?

I'll take some of the heat now. Hee hee.

I don't care if some on here now thinks that somehow I'm a racist. If people in my community thought that, that would be a different story. But that won't happen cause they see who I really am. yippie /forum/images/graemlins/applaudit.gif

Pollack: A marine food fish (Pollachius virens) of northern Atlantic waters, related to the cod.

The term "Pollacks" could be considered a derogatory term and that quite frankly may "offend" someone of Polish decent. The correct terminology is Poles.

Wow, gone for a few days and come back to 100's of posts and 4 pages worth of this dispute? Some I am glad that I read (insightful) but some were just a waste of time. Are we through here now or do I need to lock this thread?

Don't lock it, delete it. /forum/images/graemlins/headboom.gif

the X man,

Everyone has a different tolerance for off-color jokes. That's human nature. But...something to consider is that this is the Tree Buzz Cafe. If the dialog can't stay civil and friendly, the bouncers come out and toss people out the door. That's not what anyone wants, I don't think. If anyone does, please take it someplace else.

Another thought is to take the discussion off the forum. If there's something that anyone wants to discuss with another Tree Buzzer, make a request to talk off-forum or check the member profile. Let's not start doing laundry in public.

plenty of us could say the same thing, but this is not your living room, or a comedy club. It's a public forum. Some of us are friends, most of us are at least friendly, but sometimes we are strangers. We don't know who's on the other end of things. If my friend heard me tell a joke like this, he might not see anything wrong with it, but a stranger might well assume I was a racist. I think it is worth it to show a little restraint in a venue like this.

You miss my point. The joke without the dialect was just a funny about divorce, child support and revenge. With the dialect (coming from someone who doesn't usually talk that way), it suggests that "those people" whether black or hillbilly or whatever are to be mocked by "us people". There's just no point, in terms of makingthe joke funnier or better.

(sigh) He got hot without ever being called a racist. But I'm glad he fought for his side, and I'm glad we had this discussion. I don't know why people would be scared to join in. I can understand why they'd just avoid the whole thing (I suspect there are more of us on both sides who didn't respond at all). Frankly, I never imagined we'd get so much argument out of it, but I think it's important to discuss these issues. I am grateful that we can talk about these things here rather than having things quickly disintegrate into insults and invective.

I thought we were getting along. We talked about a hot issue, so it's no surprise people got a little hot, but mostly we all stayed civil and stuck to the issues. I think we'd all be better off if that happened more often in the world. I certainly don't think you are a racist because you disagree with me.

But clearly people are tired of it, as am I. So, Mark, if you feel a need to lock the topic, go ahead. I don't understand why it's necessary, though, and I'll continue to respond if anyone is still interested in discussing the issues I've raised.

I thought about it, but decided not to. You see, I really have the utmost respect and confidence in this widely diverse community here at TreeBuzz. As this discussion went on, it became apparent to me that most here do respect one another and can disagree without becoming too disagreeable!

I think that there will always be some disputing here since it's a "discussion forum" and I hope that we can continue to do so in a respectful manner.

Babberney,

Very well said man!

It's all cool with me.

Mark, you make good decisions.

Stuff might flare up every once in a while and that's okay. We talk about it and most of us will straighten it out ourselves.

I can see if a post just kept calling names and getting crazy, then yes, maybe lock one someday.

But I think we have a good group of people here that can argue and return to normal. It's good to discuss and we won't always agree, and that's what makes discussions interesting.

If you are sick of reading a post. You don't have to pull it up and read it anymore. Why are people pulling up the post and saying to lock it and stuff, it's because it is interesting to them to see what is said next. Hot topics do pull a lot of interest. Check out the view numbers on these hot discussions.

Blabberney I agree with some of your response to me and I thought it was written well. You're alright! /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif
