It's amazing what we can suck out of the poor

Re: It\'s amazing what we can suck out of the poor

Interesting comment, Glenn.

Because it seems to me all the liberals here are doing is regurgitating ABC/CNN/MSN propaganda.

The Democratic party has enslaved more people in the US than anyone.

Jim454, No you cannot come over and look through my stuff. Your point is...

NeTree, I'll take your post as an admission that you have nothing of substance to contribute about the original NY Times article. If you change your mind, I'll be happy to engage, otherwise I'll refrain from any further response to your empty rhetoric.

Re: It\'s amazing what we can suck out of the poor

Here's my contribution to the original article:

Stay out of trouble.

Re: It\'s amazing what we can suck out of the poor

So tell me, Mr. "Citizen of planet earth first"...

While you're so worried about overburdened convicted criminals, where's your thread about the innocent people in the rest of the world being raped, maimed, tortured, and killed in places like Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.?

Re: It\'s amazing what we can suck out of the poor

Here in MA, our courts are aflood with burdens placed on defendants, mostly by liberal policies under the guise of "rehabilitation".

Programs like anger management, drug rehabs of all types and sizes, and batterer programs are all huge cash cows. There's a "victim-witness fee", a "head injury surcharge", and all sorts of other ways to stick it to you.

Experts agree none of those programs work, and they're all very expensive and burdensome for the defendant; however, they're given as an option to incarceration.

Well Glenn, let's see if we can find anything of value, (stay with me now) make a quick run to the pawn shop, collect some cash, see? We'll then take that money and give it to the poor convicts that just can't seem to get out of the rut.

How's that?

See, that's a way to just get in there and do something. Maybe we can snap a picture of the good deed and you can put it in your website! (No charge for that one) We can also call the local paper for a news story. I can see it now,
"Citizen of earth first finally shuts mouth and get hands dirty"

The "citizen of planet earth first" title is awesome. I say it out load and just laugh. Thanks for that Glenn.

Apparently you two have difficulty grasping the concept that a U.S. citizen doesn't have to violate the law to be arrested.

I'm concerned about human rights violations wherever they occur. That other and perhaps more severe violations occur elsewhere does not diminish the importance of addressing and correcting lesser injustices, whether domestic or foreign. So I fail to see your logic.

You can certainly make the attempt; I'll be happy to have you arrested. I hope you have enough cash to make bail.

Re: It\'s amazing what we can suck out of the poor

Glenn, the truncated story posted isn't about innocent people.

Bail? I'm not worried.

Re: It\'s amazing what we can suck out of the poor

NeTree, You're assuming too much. You don't have enough information in that article to know whether or not every individual mentioned was convicted of a crime.

I'm glad you have no need to be worried about posting bail if you were ever arrested unfairly. Not everyone has sufficient resources.

Re: It\'s amazing what we can suck out of the poor

So the reverse must then also be true; you don't have enough information to know that every individual WASN'T convicted of a crime.

Re: It\'s amazing what we can suck out of the poor

Glenn, I have no interest in doing anything illegal, this will be a partnership between you and I.

It's for the greater good man!

Re: It\'s amazing what we can suck out of the poor

But let's start with the missing first paragraph to the article, shall we?

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. — Three years ago, Gina Ray, who is now 31 and unemployed, was fined $179 for speeding. She failed to show up at court (she says the ticket bore the wrong date), so her license was revoked. When she was next pulled over, she was, of course, driving without a license. By then her fees added up to more than $1,500. Unable to pay, she was handed over to a private probation company and jailed — charged an additional fee for each day behind bars.

Re: It\'s amazing what we can suck out of the poor

Then there's the last paragraph, which does suggest that people with criminal convictions are the subject of the article.

Re: It\'s amazing what we can suck out of the poor

No doubt most the people who are charged various fees resulting from their run in with our legal system are criminals.

It's also criminal how our legal system has become so intertwined with 'free enterprise' service providers. There is way too much money changing hands and I bet a lot behind the scenes, too.

A good friend of mine spent 3 days in jail just south of Macon GA a few months ago. He was carrying and has a permit but he was stopped in a small town and they claim his bumper sticker ‘Kentucky Windage’ is that of a group involved in domestic terrorism. He got no chance to make a phone call and no chance to go before a judge for three days. He had to make an extra trip back down to get his firearm back.

We are turning more and more towards being a police state and having money for bail just may not get you out of jail.

"It's also criminal how our legal system has become so intertwined with 'free enterprise' service providers. "

I'm not in complete disagreement; I've said for years we have the best legal system in the world that money can buy.

But I've always applied my philosophy of trying to not give them reason to arrest you in the first place; you can't win a fight with cops. So I'm not running around speeding, being drunk in public, or being a deadbeat dad. The people in the article set their own chain of events in motion.
