And can anyone tell us about the japanese climbing demo ?

It was very well presented. They used a 1" diameter manila rope 10 meters long. On each end they tied a 1.5" diameter hardwood stick about 24" long. They tied it using a 3 coil clove hitch. The stick was tossed around the stem and lashed using one half hitch. A loop was then formed and figure 8 lashed to the stick. The climber stepped into the loop, grabbed the opposite end of the roe to pull up the other stick and repeated the process. Because everything was lashed, thet were able to unlash the stick beneath them to repeat the steps. Very ingenious and impressive.

Trad Japan tree climbing demo at ITCC

Here's some video from the Japan Arborists Association and Tree Climbing Japan's (John Gathright MC) demonstration of 16th century Japanese climbing technique:

Climbing technique demo

I was facilitating at the public climb and handed the camera off to a friend to shoot, it's missing some parts and the sound isn't great but it should give you an idea of the technique.

Apologies for misspelling aboriculture in the video title, What the heck, I'm not a CA, how would I know?

Cool video, thanks. Anyone else have some footage of the competition they'd like to share?
