Industry post Covid19

It’s going to be a long 2-3 months and things will get better as fast as it fell. I hope
All we can do is hang on and try to make it through this
With recent reports coming out of Italy-China-and even Seattle there is light at the end of the tunnel

stay positive
Stay distanced
Stay safe
And also congrats on sobriety!!!

More tree preservation

better PHC practices

wildlife remediation/creation

educate clients and industry that this is the most dangerous job in the world and the price tag needs to reflect that risk.

I don't think that this is the most dangerous job in the world by a long shot.
Full of dangerous workers, sure enough.
Full of underskilled workers with dangerous management, sure enough.
When proper precautions are taken it’s only as dangerous as you make it

Probably safer than driving at 2:30 a.m just have to watch out for other people

Fair enough.

statistically it his either #1 or #2, trading off with commercial fishing. Apparently we get bundled in with logging from what I have heard.

I could be wrong, but I think that honour maybe belongs to Mixed Gas Commercial Divers/ Welders - these are the guys that work deep commercial diving on North Sea oil rigs and the like and are paid hundreds of thousands a year - it's tremendously dangerous, highly skilled and highly regulated work. Those guys have balls of steel believe me. Maybe someone knows of something else, but they get my vote. Treework is controllable risk for the most part. And some days, I get to have lunch in a swaying treetop on a breezy day looking out at the snowcapped Rockies!

Good point. I think after this that people will maybe have a greater appreciation of trees and green spaces and be more willing to maintain rather than remove. Also a potential rise in appreciation for city parks and wilderness areas. Here in NZ we are locked down right across the country, and more or less limited to 2km circle around our houses (except for food and medicine etc) we are seriously appreciating our local parks, gardens and trees much more than we have before.
I think, it will result in a huge slowdown - people (customers) are going to be fighting to just keep their houses and food on the table, if they haven't lost them within the next quarter. With defaults on rentals and young folks losing jobs, there's going to be major, major disruption to what we've been used to the last five years or so. Smaller companies with payments for equipment will go under and larger well financed outfits will gain market share (of whatever is left of a market). Look back to what tree work was like in San Jose in the dotcom bubble maybe. For small outfits - cash is king. I hope everyone comes out in one piece. Try and help any arbs with family members with medical expenses, etc. This is a chance to come together as a community, internationallly, and strenghten "the guild". Support your local small businesses. Strong arms working for the Food Banks? What's Buckin's mantra? Soldiers of Kindness? More appropriate than ever.

Do you think after this there will be a higher prevalence of leasing gear rather than buying it, and maybe investing more in staff and training instead?
You might make less on each job but overall risk would be a lot lower. Might be a good diversification for local saw shops that would give them an income that can't be messed up with internet buying as well.

It would be awesome if we could keep the concept of being good to each other going after all this has blown over as well...

As someone who spent yrs working for high ballin yarder outfits I can tell you logging is much more dangerous that arb work....
How realistic is that show (axe men?)? I feel every time I watch it, mostly on YouTube, someone breaks a bone or nearly dies.

I went through a type of greed, money making phase about 20 years ago, unfortunately was blind to my character defects, hopefully I have better conscience awareness now.

I'd like to see a lot more win/win situations where those of substantial means pay their fair share. Many of us probably have herd immunity at this point, I live and work in the NYC area in CT, part time at Home Depot. This virus has been circulating for months, those with good immunities will be OK. Many more will suffer terribly in hospitals and intensive care units as so many have already. I have always believed in natural remedies and consume lots of organic garlic and othere herbs and try to stay in good shape.

Lockdown is 8pm to 6am. But we can do shopping for groceries and pharmacy and a bit of exercise but social distancing required during the day.
