Ice climbing nail biter

That would be scary! I don't think he would have died though, he was lead climbing and would have been anchored below his rope. I think the worst that would have happened would have been a good fall into his system unless his anchor ripped out!
Still a scary situation!

First rule of ice climbing:

Never fall!

I've used my plastic boots/crampons/ice tools to climb dead trees.

Interesting...

After an ice storm, crampons, for removals, are indispensable.

Are you sure a good pair of corks just won't do?

DO YOU WANT A ROPE?....

Now that was the RIGHT question...

Learning to ask the right questions is indispensable..

personally, I'd rather stay home and watch TV....

When I get done risking my life, I want some one to hand me a nice fat check! Guess I got spoiled from all the trees huh?

What Daniel meant to say was: "When I am done 'risking my life' I take off my XS Stihl Sweatshirt, turn the camera off, and head straight for TreeBuzz."

You could front point if you had caulks on your knees and foot straps. Could be the new thing. Save your ankles. Duckwalk crawling isn't a very glamorous climbing style though.

Actually the ability to stuff your shins and knees into very tight V crotches without pain or discomfort can be a very empowering thing!

It's really quite hilarious the way putting on my boots and braces is sorta like Clark kent going into his phone booth. Because without my boots and braces on, I'm a total wuss!

plenty of "safe" ice climbing here in WNC......(top rope)

of course...if you go attempt something running with an absurd amount of water you are asking for it.

A very early start is imperative if temps warm up...ice can vary from very "plastic" to crazy brittle based on temp.

I had an entire route come off over our heads once when pushing the time window....survived that shat..

I would steer away from climbing an ice covered tree PERIOD...recommendeding crampons to do this is dumb IMO

Now lead climbing ice is WILD....prepare to shat your pants

Im not a rock, or ice climber. But the emotions/actions/responses of the top crew was stellar in my book! Everyone was very calm, re-assuring, courteous and relaxed in an extremely tense situation. kudos to them GREAT TEAM WORK
