I will use climbing pants now!!!!!

Another perspective to consider....... yes we live in free countries where we should have the right to decide for ourselves etc, etc. But.........why should we impose the expense of our stupidity on our neighbour? In Canada we have medical expenses paid for through our taxes, but why should I have to pay for:
a) mistakes/stupidity with a saw
b) the decision not to wear protection
c) smokers
d) drunk drivers
e) etc

Arborcare,

No, no, no. I'm not calling you a baby at all. Don't get me wrong.

It's not a macho thing. Although I did try to play on that a little to be funny.

Human flesh can't be tough against a chainsaw.

I also respect you telling an accident/mistake; many people would not let that be known. It's very good of you to share your story; it will do some good, it may cause say 50 people to buy the protective pants and may save 15 people from a serious injury.

I think the climbing pants are a great product. I keep saying I'm going to order one or two for my guys.

I'm just saying I'm glad I have the RIGHT whether to choose to wear or not to wear them. You made a choice to wear them, great. If I had a close call or cut, then I'm sure I would change my preferance too. But if I personally feel that I (the company owner) performs better without protective pants, then I should be able to choose NOT to wear them.

It's like the saftey glasses. Yes I wear them, cause OSHA says I have to (and I would anyway most of the time). But if I'm pole clipping from the ground or if I'm doing a technicle removal in the winter with high humidity. I'd like to have the choice to remove the foggy glasses so I can see and work safer. Foggy glasses are very unsafe if you ask me. I should be able to weigh the risk and make a choice as to what I feel is more safe. If I think I'm more safe taking the foggy glasses off and using my face screen, then I should be allowed to do so. But if there is a LAW saying saftey glasses must be on at all times, then that takes away that free choice, now you have to decide do you do what you feel is safer and risk having a possible violation.

As I said, "I feel there is no more risk in ME cutting MY neck then there is cutting MY leg.

Mangoes, yes, if someones accidents result in higher costs for everyone else, then there should be laws that make high risk behavior illegal. Is there a large number of climbers that cut their legs?

If some of you feel that yes, every protective equipment should be worn. Then also be sure you wear these things: wear a cup every day, just in case you fall limb walking and staddle the limb between your legs. Wear the chainsaw protective socks in your boots. Wear the aluminum toe guards that speed chop axe users wear in competition. Wear a full bee suit in case you come across bees (as most of us do). Make sure you put on sun-block every day, as skin cancer is on the increase. Wear a mouth peice so you don't break your teeth out. Put on ivy-block every day, in case you come across poison ivy. Wear a respirator in case you come across a dust that may cause harm to your lungs.

What is practical and what is too much...... Each of us will have our opinion. No one that is normal likes to get hurt or killed. Let us make the choice as to what we feel is good for saftey, it's in our best interest.

I mentioned the bee thing in my protective equipment list. Hmmmmm..... that does make me wonder. How many tree guys do die or get hospitalized from bee stings?

How many climbers do cut themselves in the leg?

Very well said!!!

The collectivist mentality is that we are too stupid to decide for ourselves.

I have had to wear a bee suit on three different occasions to remove trees in situations that they had to be removed immediately.

I think X-Man's point was that, following safety logic, we should wear bee suits everyday because we 'might' run into bees. thinking along those lines isn't a bad idea but it seems like X is having a bit of funn using a hyperbole.

The HSE in the UK has the right idea, on paper atleast. They use the phrase "Where reasonably practical" when talking about PPE. In other words if your safety glasses are fogging up and it makes the job more dangerous it maybe practical to remove them and work without them. You better have a good reason to back it up is my feeling. Work Safe

In reguards to Arborcare1: Thanks for sharing your story. Heal well.

In reguards to chaps in trees: I am glad we can choose whether we want to wear them in trees or not. But, I see a common thing with the climbers who are enforced or who choose to wear them in a tree. They are usually the northern latitude countries (or dwellers) where summers are a lot cooler. The USA is huge! It's summers are hot. Especially in the south when the humidity is mixed with temperature.

I could not imagine being in the south in 95 degree temperature, with 90% humidity, and with black colored chaps in the tree.--Shoot, that's a heat stroke waiting to happen. Well, it may not be a heat stroke, but it could set someone up for dehydration. Dehydration can make a person dissy and light headed.---Now that is not a good combination for a person in a tree with a chainsaw!

Any one going to wear chaps this summer? Any one in Phoenix up for the challenge!

Actually, the black SIP and a pair of Under Armor skivies seems to be cooler than Carhardts of jeans. The back of the pants dont hold the sweat like cotton does and the cottom batting in the front isn't that thick. Its 94 and 90% humidity here already and I don't find the pants any worse than jeans!

In the UK its type C up the tree{full protection} and on the ground front protection, but a lot of the guys wear type C on the ground.I swear about the heat all the time but i wont work without them.we might be the elite breed but we all make mistakes, safe climbing guys.
