I thought it couldnt be done.

So after a few frustrating nights of not being able to bury the core on two different ropes for eye splices, searching through many threads on here, watching many videos, I stopped for a night and gave it a break. I kept running into the problem of everything tightening up and nothing I tried would work. I tried making a "bullet" with tape as some had described, broke wire on the fid hooking up a come a long, still nothing. I was making sure I hadnt been snagging the core as the fid went through but still no dice.

So last night I tried again. The first pull on the core bury went almost effortlessly, due to pulling as much core out as I could, and sticking an awl through it to hold it in place. I'm not sure why I didnt try that before, but it allowed me to do two eye splices in a much shorter amount of time, and a LOT less frustration.

Now in terms of running the splice home, I believe with the luna here I may have made the eye measurements too small, as it seems I really cant get much more out of it. For the blue moon I think I can still bury more, but its getting tough. I just thought I would share my experience not doing this before and having been interested in it, I'm glad I figured out the part I couldnt get past before and now want to continue trying more.

Here's what I tried so far.

With the Blue Moon it looks like the core bunched up right before the crossover. You can help prevent that by stitching the crossover and by keeping tension on the eye while you milk the core for the final bury. I keep tension on the eye by attaching an HMS carabiner attached to an old prussic cord that is girth hitched to a thick dowel.

Good luck, you will get it eventually.

So I cut the blue moon apart and tried again, this time stitching the cross over section as well as measuring a bigger eye. It turned out much cleaner, now just trying to get this final bury all the way in, I even put it over a branch and hung from it to try to bury it more, just needs more working at it I think.

Here are some things I do which helps me with the final bury:

Putting weight on the eye as soon as I start the bury. I find this helps keep everything in place and prevent the bunching problem. At least for me it does.

Mount rock climbing Bolt-Hangers onto your wall. I have one mounted 5' up and another above it at 7'6". This lets me work indoors where it's warm and dry. Tie a knot in the rope and clip it to whichever bolt works better.

Wrap a whoopee sling around my waist. Cinch it tight and clip this into the eye being spliced. This lets me put all my weight into the splice while I am milking the bury closed.

Wear climbing gloves for better grip on the rope.

Massage the taper as Treezybreez said above.

As NickfromWI has said, try using a longer, more gradual taper.

Looks better and good Luck.

I believe I used samsons instructions along with a video by wesspur on youtube. In terms of how many strands I left for the taper I followed whatever was suggested in the directions I used.
