Umm, Have you emptied yours yet, nincompoop? I wrote you a long reply last week and lost it because your mailbox was too full.

You were so pissing me off back then.

Good job on getting the WC. Now flaunt it to your clients, and encourage them to check up on your policy, as well as any other tree services they talk to. It's a good move, and a mandatory one (once you get bigger than just yourself working), legally.

I was really stoked when I got w/c to.I thought I would surely get more of the jobs I looked at,just by telling the customer that I had it and to make sure the other bidding co. had it also.I figured I could cut the weekend guys out for sure.Well it doesn't really work like that.Seems like about 95% of people don't understand what w/c does to protect them, even if you explain it to them they just don't seem to care. All they really care about is insurance to cover damage to the house, and of course lowest price.

Don't get me wrong I'm glad I have it.I just think it's another percentage of payroll out of my pocket with limited benefit to me.Of course you'll need it if one of your guys gets hurt. But if that happens you'll more than likely be put out of business by the lawsuit that is sure to follow.Even if your incorporated your personal assets are not protected like you think they are.

I hate to be such a nay sayer but A friend of mine in the business is going through this right now.I just think the laws should not be so anti business. If you try to do the right thing and follow the rules you shouldn't be punished for things that are out of your control.

I agree
The system sucks.
Insurance companies are organized crime for sure.
I am still glad.
I no longer have to tell employees that they will be burried in the dessert if hurt on the job. I think Im better off with it. We will see how things play out.
We are at 21 percent right now...not bad

Congrats!

It can be a one less worry, and a big one at that!

Worker's Comp is not about the big lawsuits for total disability, its for someone getting poked in the eye and going to the opthamologist and getting proper exam, antibiotics, and care.

Someone get a broken tooth from a snap on the end of the lanyard.

I'd hope that a severe injury with no negligence wouldn't close me down, but I won't hold my breath. Constant vigilance.

Me too??? You would have one hell of a crew!!!! I am packed....just waiting on the word.

I've got 1 employee and it was $700/mo for 8 months. After a year and a half of questioning them if I could do monthly payments, they finally said yes. I simply have to send in my gross payroll every month. This will make my premiums at around $500/mo.

W.C. insurance make me think more and more of being as automated as possible.

OK

BIG SURPRISE....

Work slowed down, I chickened out, the policy is sitting on someones desk at State fund gathering dust.

Metal fabbing tools check
YARD for Trucks check
Truck/chipper/grinder check
TOOLS check
Climbing/rigging gear check
GL check
EXPERIENCE check
W.C. $ check
call volume to hire a crew ?????

I guess the phone needs to ring enough before I hire anyone.
I think I may have to learn to be happy as a 1 nd a half man band.

Delusions of grandure.....

How many more bullets do you want to dodge as a result of working alone?

You pay based on percentage of payroll.

Hire someone! One day a week, every other week, who knows.
Even a day laborer through a service that you pay. They will take care of all the WC for that person as part of the fee.

Think about synergy (the whole is more than the sum of the parts). You must end up spending a lot more energy pulling apart a brush pile that is all stacked up. You are more likely to get hurt from the extra joint strain of a tangled brush mess, or trip over something pulling it apart.

You will have more time for marketing, and your advertising value from drive-by's will be better as you look like a team (even if it is a LaborReady guy that you gave a matching shirt to).

Your call and respond between you and the ground will "advertise" to the neighbors that you are a professional and trustworthy.

I think that it seems to HOs that a solo outfit is not as safe. If you are not as safe with your own life, can they trust you to be safe with their property?

It will be worth it. You only pay for what you use.

You will need a good plan of how to work with the employee. The "Do's and Don't's" for the employee. For example, ALL questions get referred to you. A friend's instantly fired employee told a large contractor's representative that "no we don't have a bucket truck" which was true, but he has access to a 61' tow behind lift that accesses most every tree in the market (few fences, so the limited side reach just means more re-positioning).

I started out solo without insurance, and with a little part time help here and there. It built. Now I have two part-to-full time guys that I am training and getting greater productivity than the once in a while help, WC, Gen Liab, licensed, chipper, old asplundh chip truck, old grinder, yada yada, in two years. While its not a lot, I did 10,000 in revenue last month (I'd been gone 8 months this summer, so my visibility on the job and the trucks in transit has been down.)

I don't know how WC/ Gen Liability is connected to taxes and the Fed/ state gov't, in the event that all taxes and licensing are not arranged, you may still be able to be covered partly.

The delusions of grandeur part--Keep dreaming! Keep working! Keep learning! Keep progressing!!!!

"Some people dream great dreams. Some people get up early and work to achieve them!"

Sounds like you want to be the latter.

and most impotantly, learn how to spell grandeur.

Thank you Sean, you are right. I do use a labor service from time to time just to drag brush from point A to B
W.C. and my Arborist cert need to be accomplished more than anything. THEN, then marketing/advertising......I dont know why I keep finding excuses....
I geuss its because I find them lying around all over the place.

Payroll service. I use a bookkeeping service for payroll, figuring all the withholdings, pays my W/C (through WA state), Sales tax, unemployment, taxes, etc.

It has made my life soooooo much simplier than it would have been. I was just starting and had less than zero time for such things. All my records are on file.

I just call in hours, she does her thing and calls/ emails with payroll gross/ net, emails paystubs.

If you pay semimonthly there are two perks that I see,
1) very predictable dates for everyone. Payperiod is 1st-15, 16th- end of month, payday 20th, and 5th. Employees get paid on the 20th, and have time for getting to the bank and the check clearing before rent/ mortgage is due.
2) You pay for 24 payroll processings, not 26 as with biweekly.
