Hypothetical Arbo Report: Drive Through Redwoods

This week I was looking at the information and height data for the 3 drive through redwoods in California.

You know the ones - carved out for vehicles to drive through.

A thought came to mind .... what if a tree like those was in an urban area, and an arborist had to take care of it or provide an arborist report for it?

If those trees were on a commercial property or park in an urban area, and you did a report, any idea what kind of comments you would write based off what you can see in images? Or having visited? How would these trees match up to standard risk-accessment criteria?

This page mentions all 3.

About Drive Through Redwoods

The Chandelier Tree is in Leggett. The Shrine Tree is in Myers Flat. And the Tour Thru Tree is in Klamath.

Would you ever be willing to write on a report that these trees were safe to stand under?

Prediction?

There are a ton of images online for all 3 if you Google for photos.

Just in case you couldn't see the daylight up the center? Actually, there is daylight visible from top to tunnel cieling in the Shrine Tree and Drive Thru Tree. Not sure about Chandelier

And higher up.

See the cable? Looks like a crack is expanding at the top of the opening, let alone elsewhere potentially.

Close up of bottom right. Looks like dead wood meets the soil.

What a mess! Not exactly what you'd call good tree/landscape practices :-) Leftover from another era when trees were not quite considered to be living objects with basic requirements for health and stability.

The Shrine tree appears close to collapse.

Good documentation Mario, thanks for posting.

Is that shrine tree a living...........stub?

It's got something green up there. But its not 275 feet tall like the sign says.

The rangefinder measured 136 feet. Not very tall anymore. And probably was over 300 feet once upon a time centuries ago.

I was at the Chandelier Tree in January, it seemed solid from the ground. The car I had was too big to drive through though.

Its probably the most solid of all of them.

Proportionately, it has more wood on the tunnel walls for the size of hole.

Although, it is taller and should weigh a lot more than the other two.
