Husky 550 vs. Stihl 261?

I'm looking for a saw, on the lighter side, to bring aloft that can pull 20" nicely.

My 372 is just a bit too much for me if I forget to eat my spinach.

Thoughts or other suggestions?

Thanks!

i wouldnt go off of just me saying this, but when speaking about the 550, im not sure it would cut too hot on hardwoods with a 20" bar. but it is a great saw.
the new stihl 362C is pretty light for what it is. ive used it aloft and its not nearly as heavy as the 372.

not dissing your new one, but miss your old avatar man!

I like the Stihl MS-261C-MQ for a 20" saw in the tree. Anything bigger is clumsy and tires me out fast, and this saw handles well and is fairly light. The MQ model has the M-Tronic ignition, which I love. Put it in the START position (choked) and pull it twice. It always fires, and often starts up, on the second pull. Flip the switch to RUN and pull it a third time and it always starts on that pull. The Q in the model designation is the chain brake activation when you release the TRIGGER RELEASE lever on top of the rear handle. This stops the chain in less than half a second, and I really like this feature. I never notice it when using the saw, it does not add any inconvenience. But, if you let go of the handle for any reason, or drop the saw, the chain stops. It does not stop the engine. Bit of extra safety, especially when lugging it around in the canopy or on a spar, when things can get a bit awkward with anything bigger than a tophandle saw.

When the saw is new, the M-tronic saws can be a bitch to start the first couple times. They tend to flood easy when new. I found that it doesn't help to keep pulling on it. Just take out the spark plug, pull it a couple of times, and put it back in. It will start. I had to do this the first and second times I started the 261, and have never had to do it since.

I won't comment on any of the other 20" saws I have, because I don't take any of them up in the tree since getting the MS-261C-MQ saw. Hope this helps.

550xp will pull a 20" but it's not ideal, especially in hardwoods. Can't speak to the 261 as I've never used one aloft. My usual saw up from my top handle is a 562xp.

I second this. The 562 is a sweet saw. I have actually had a lot of problems with the 550 I purchased new. I love that saw too. Just has been in the shop so much I hardly ever get to use it.

Great Info, I really appreciate it. I think the husky 562 and stihl 362 might still have a bit more weight than I was hoping to find, I was looking to shed about one or two more pounds so I may have to give this 261 c-mq a spin... i like that auto lock too.

As for the ladybug, I just wanted to showcase this very GoodPredator!

I burned the rings on my 550XP within 8 months of purchase, was well maintained and treated well. It cuts great but I think they engineered it close to the edge of failure. My saw mechanic has a bunch of dead ones gathering dust, he said putting a 20" bar on it is a great way to wreck it. I did do that once in awhile. I believe it's optimal with an 18" bar. I went with a Stihl 271 and love it. The 550 is lighter, I wish it was a better saw. -AJ
