How to sharpen your spikes?????!

I have been climbing for 9 years, but I am still horrible at sharpening my climbing spikes.

I use the Distel Alu spikes - with an "american spike" instead of the horrible spikes they originally come with.

Anyway, my point is: How do you guys sharpen your spikes?
If you have some drawings, they would be very useful!

Take care!

Buckingham Manufacturing has sharpening kits available and their website is a good source for instructions. Here is a link to a PDF for their pole gaff maintenance, other PDF's are available if you do some searching there. This is a general sharpening guide for their gaffs, be aware the contour of yours may be different and the MFG may have their own sharpening guide available.

Only file the outside and not underneath the gaff- ONLY THE OUTSIDE!

This is absolutely incorrect. Don't touch the top.

Maintaining a sharp edge on the underside and keeping the same beveled edge is the key.
Consult the manufacturer for sharpening instructions.

I agree, it doesn't take much filing either. Make the edge clean.

Jeff,
Checked you out on that website you listed, and with 28 years in the biz I figured it had to be something like that.

Yea, that, or 28 years of the same 3 years .

Guys, I had a couple guys here that day that dont have computers and we we hanging, I wrote wrong to the question only because I was taught back in the 70's and early 80's to sharpen only the outside. After some years I was told only under, so I did and was gaffing out alot. I personally think only the outside but would not teach that because of reprocussions.
Again, sorry, but I personally file only the outside. Don't get mad, it works for me.
Jeff

I only sharpen the underside too. I have found a small metal "filing guide", that came with my first bashling spikes. But it is a little tricky to use...
I'll print the guides from BostonBulls's post.

But if i injure myself you all have to support my family!!!

Kind of an odd side step/retraction oif your apology.

bad advice my tree friend, bad advice. Sharpening the outsides changes the gaff angle and in turn changes how the gaff enters and holds itslef in the wood.

Be safe!

LMAO and to think this bafoon is an Ops. Manager, hahahaha that whole branch office must look like wack job when they show up to other.

Power to the people, or is it power to the over papered?, maybe it's power to the one's with gift of BS??

I was taught to use a flat file on the underside only and never change the angle. Less is more when sharpening spikes. Oversharpening makes them difficult to pull out of the tree.
