Yes, it is.. but he didn't actually say what all he was marking. It's not a myth regarding cast aluminum and a few other cast metals, though. Homeowners, etc. tend to whack stamping tools HARD with a big hammer. I wouldn't try to stamp an aluminum or magnesium sidecover on a chainsaw engine without removing it first and backing it up with a wood block on the backside. But then, I'd just engrave it.

I was just looking at a bunch of the stuff laying around here... nearly all of it is either engraved, stamped, acid etched or silkscreened. Some of the steel rigging 'biners are stamped, engraved, AND etched, believe it or not! I mean, all 3 on one carabiner. Probably done at different phases of production.
