how long a lifeline for ITCC?

Not to be too cocky, but if I made it to the ITCC next year, how long a rope should I have? I'm thinking about buying a piecce of Fly for competing, and want to make sure I don't leave myself short. 150' is long enough for every TX contest I've been to, but I suspect I might want more if I get to "the show".

TIA,
Keith

The line spliced pre-purchase should have a finish length of 150'. I would think if you wanted a 175' length after the splice, it could be done that way. Simply request it when you order and you being the customer should get what you want.

As for lenth, in the MW, 120' was needed for prelims, and the MC just depended upon the tree and the way it was worked. This past yr, a 150' was recommended.

ummm... being a retailer yourself, I figured you'd know how the ropes come from the manufacturer.

Retailers get a lot of their ropes in 600' spools, but also many are prepackaged bags of 120', 150' or 200'. If you want a 150' rope spliced, they will typically grab a 150' rope and splice the end. Lengths can vary because of high speed production from the manufacturer, usually well under 5%. The splice should use about 3' of rope.

This might help you decide.
While Rip Tompkins and Andrew Hordyk were setting up the Masters Challenge at the ITCC in Montreal, Rip looked at a group of us and said,..quote "For all of you young guys out there, don't ever show up to a Masters Challenge without 200 feet of rope." end quote

That definitely gets my attention. abd since the price from sherrill's is the same for 200' of Fly as for 200' of safety blue (well, a dollar more), it just comes down to the splice. I read a description of the fly splice here and could barely follow it, while I can splice NE SB in half an hour or so.

Splicers: is it worth the $28 to have it done, or should I dive in and try this (I like splicing, FWIW).

Yes I am a retailer and I know how I get my rope. In a 600' spool that I cut to length. I have never bought/sold any spliced ropes. I did have another retailer tell me that if a customer wants the rope to be 150' after the splice, make sure to order it that way. And yes as you mentioned, coming from the factory, they are available in pre-cuts of 120,150,200,& 600.

Keith,
as for the splice, I dont climb with one as I dont want to spend the extra $. Seems like a waste. If you cut/damage your rope, you just tossed $28. If you can splice yourself, I would take advantage of the $ savings.

Keith, the Fly splice is, as you've noticed, not super simple. It will may take some practice and as tc165 said, you're looking at around 3' per splice. You have to have the right tools, too. I highly reccomend the 1/4" fid, and if not, make something from wire...it should work alright.

ps- 28 dollars is a great deal to let sherrill splice it for you!

Some of us had the Fly splice instructions going around last year and the other Nick was able to post them online for us.

It is not an easy splice. Took me 3 tries (and 10' of rope) before I got it dressed properly. My second Fly rope I bought spliced. But if you like splicing and enjoy a challenge, go for it! The benifits are that you can make the eye the size you like and you will better understand the construction of the rope. This will allow you to trust the rope easier since it is so different from other Arborist ropes.
