How do you "lubricate" your carabiners??

Re: How do you \"lubricate\" your carabiners??

I use wd-40. It's cheap and I've had no problems with it.

next time you have you can of wd 40 out take a look a the lable, it doent say anywere on the can that its a lubricant. for some reson alot of ppl think it is, it is just used to break rust down or to enitaly get a corroded tool working again, but you should proper lubricate afterwards

Yes, I know it isn't a lubricant product. But it is the best product I have tried on carabiners.

I have been trying graphit powder, but it seems to sort of block the carabiners. When I used it, I had to "relube" again every second day. When I use the WD40 I clean the carabiners with pressure air and WD40 approximately once a week - and they are working really well.

Oh- I've also used parrafin based "White Lightning" on carabiners. It's lube for my bike chains. Works well.

Re: How do you \"lubricate\" your carabiners??

I see quite a few of us are using Dry Graphite.

Graphite is a no-no on aluminium, in the presence of moisture it promotes corrosion, and in particular the galvanic reaction between aluminium and steel, such as at the pivot point, which I assume is one spot you would be specifically applying the lube.

Graphite lube has long been struck from use on aluminium parts in the aircraft industry for just this reason.

I'm sure we all cycle our 'biners to retirement before the corrosion would become significant, but still...

Good info North. I'm certainly not opposed to using standard lube on my biners. I've got cans of chain lube from when I used to ride sport bikes that I wouldnt be opposed to trying. :P
