Arborist's heritage goes back from trees to telegraph/electric poles to ships rigging. This series would be such a treat. I'll be there in my next lifetime

Wind and water powered craft, at low friction connected much trade in the old 'flat' world as a heritage; and it has given much to us, but for me mostly adding to a more ongoing thru all time
Rope Heritage as a greater unsung hero for much longer than boat usage, that even helped challenge and develop our intellect i think.
.
To me "Hold Fast" means immediately and and as if permanently/until willingly released immovable; as like not to get washed overboard by even sudden impacts of change. So, 'Hold Fast' as with the power of your own lion's roar yo!
Or until another "purchase" of rope from the loaded side increasing tension(less rope over same distance) in remaining loaded side and perhaps even moving the receiving target; to then 'hold fast' again the new 'purchase' with the rest of the bank of rope(in similar imagery for lowering/releiving we 'pay out' of the slacker rope bank to the loaded side) to the less or unloaded side of the friction buffer assisting.
Ratchetting gears make the hold easier in capstan, multitudes of many x leverage(note musicians in B&Ws to keep consistent time, in 'concerted' effort thru the grueling work and also let time pass as could be approaching a sweating and puking blood from the slave like labor).
capstan-frictions-enabling-force.png
Even with 1 way ratchet capstan, still needed tailer to not let rope build in layers on capstan spool, that would be decreasing the leveraged ratio between the inputs and final output. Bottom 2 pix tailer really evident, either tucked away out of the travel, or with low rope able to be stepped over easily, for this essential position.
Perhaps in theses pix, can even smell the salt air. These are all shipside tho. MANY ports had capstans on shore, still some remain. A rowboat could drag light rope behind them to connect shore to boat then pull real rope or chain to shore for commerce the town needed, or even save lives. Same many men cranking away thru even great levers to get the raw, hard, gritty work done, even thru storm raging in; this was the life.

This can be taking a 'purchase' from loaded side of capstan, to the un or less loaded side of capstan or other friction buffer. Pulleys instead of capstan setup can give linear purchases, more nominal 1xCosine of each leg, but leveraging across at the Samson 90 degree angle bring MULTIPLICATION of force per leg(rather than pulley ADDITIVE that is also at more friction and rope cost$). So simplest single leg, minimal tools tension increase i think is to take the 'purchase' is via other old world terms of "swig/sweat".
sweatingToss-Adkins.JPG

as like this broken to 2 lines of separate functions of sweat/swig and keep to 2 ropes (youtube link):
youtube_sweat_sm.png
or this prized piece from the ol'daze of the original tree climber open chat site ISA.bbs, as what we call forum now;
where we see in a speedline the swig/sweat effect gathered to work against us if let it, suddenly tightening rope out of our hands without the Prussic as a 1 way capture, into the capstan as friction buffer to control the sudden pulses of the sweat/swig effect impacting line HARD.

So, so much brought to us in this sea heritage, but hardly not all.
For millions of years previously to even the idea of controlling boat so;
Rock, wood and homemaid rope where all the building materials available;
And the rope the most repeatable, reusable and easiest to form of the 3.
Thus have always tried to show, as see now echoed hear; that rope work as a MAJOR part of our understandings or engineering etc., that even challenged our brains to growth etc.
But alas, the least evidence, as vines and leather rot away much faster than the wood and stone; a byproduct of being the most usable and formable. But logically, gathering and even linking forces of individual parts aligned to single task, that must be done in specific order or fail; as the start of engineering outside of self, that even shows in computer programs of gathering and aligning in the correct order or fail hopelessly!
Rope got us linking several mechanics to one as like rock tied to stick for hammer and on, as rope helped clothe, shelter, feed etc. as it challenged the minds of our kind.

Lost Knowledge: Ropes and Knots: Ropewalk factories are some of the most remarkable industrial workshops and buildings in history.

.

Stone Age String Strengthens Case for Neandertal Smarts: Our extinct cousins had fiber technology. Stop calling them dumb already

.
Thus i think an aim of or/or should be of scouting, is not just how many knots can tie, or for what for;
but rather to step young minds thru this heritage of mental development.
As like the reference have picked up over studies, of yoga tracing the animate stages of existence; gathering the best at different levels of 'evolution' , to bring in, and not lose across time. Scout knotting can as like , walk thru these stages of development, that brought us here, with less loss; in the 'journey not destination' type focus; as a heritage of such. Partially, because they are not all cut out to be tree nor old world boat folk; that can give this raw education.

Looks like quite a project! I was quite amused at the caption for the picture of FOUR people carrying the mizzen mast.

Heritage of parbuckle 2x ramp advantage against the load(can use for lift or controlled lower for even sea burials) :

Parbuckle.png

Radial 2D motion funneled 180 x1degree power axises into a single 1D power axis is always a logical increase, and decrease/dilution in other direction. Winch is radial motion focused into linear motion/increase of force, capstan is opposite of linear input into radial/decreasing force. If is input of linear to radial(diffusing) or input of radial to linear(funneling) makes all the difference thru the same machine; as to what is the greater/reigning aspect defining the scenario.
Step further, 3D radial of explosion funneling all multitudes of power axises to a single 1D power axis propels piston or bullet etc.
These dimensions of force, is how many things work; even without knowing the numbers heritage.

Parbuckle heritage rotationally righting (35,000 TON!) US Oklahoma in 1943 from shore of Ford Island center islet of Pearl Harbor after the 1941 bombing(still military pass only access to USS Oklahoma and USS Utah Memorials), with 56 x 190' chains with each individual link weighing 452#, for total of 29tons weight per chain average.

Luckily things didn't escalate to vaporizing whole planet heritage , moon and several stars , as Japan surrendered 10days later.

This Treemen's Heritage of Olds-Cool man powered saw and axe against huge trees way before 1man chainsaw of the 50's, and anti-perspirant only found in the 40's would seem to predate these pix as well. Maybe that is why see no wimmens near'em ! B&W pics invented a century before.

As far as i know, the ghostly 'Green Man' piercing out crying top center is not faked as the men on springboards butted into the tree work it.
Green Man is one of those bothersome items that appears mysteriously and consistently across multiple unlinked cultures of the Ancient world. Many, without words for such, saw a connecting essence in the trees that changed the planet . Like somehow instinctively all sensing the same thing, unlike typical differing cultural 'gods'; the Green Man is more of a consistent phenomenon. Maybe they were sensing the connecting mycorrhiza essence thru which dying trees even give up their sugars to the rest as one of the total essence.

Parbuckle technique is awesome. Aways back I participated in a demonstration of carbuckling giant cement blocks up a ramp. It was an examination of the feasibility of someone's idea that the Egyptian pyramid blocks were not moved by rolling on logs, which would've been a rare resource at that location. The amount of friction pushing a massive block of stone on log rollers up a ramp really puts the exclamation on the phrase "Egyptian Work!", shorthand for hard labor that seems to be going nowhere fast.

In the proposed theory semi-circular cradle frames are strapped on to the 4 sides of a rectangular block of stone or cement to create a column or circular profile lengthwise on the block. With a fairly small number of people, maybe a dozen (this was 30+ years ago) on the two parbuckling lines we were able to pull the massive block up a ramp fairly easily. After the successful demo we talked about how it now makes even more sense why early stone structures used round columns instead of squared sections, much easier to move the pieces around with parbuckling and other techniques than rectangular shaped stone that tends to "stick" to the ground with the weight and massive surface area friction against the ground surface.

The say, and can draw as 2/1, but have always tried to show as more, of course not always selling that won either....
As needs no pulley, and is not like 2/1 dragging block by pulley as even better than that is even more!
But rather another dimension of easy with the roll/not drag; and then less gear !
Then, too; round log lending itself even more so to the rotational;
for is not just a 2/1, but a rolling 2/1
and instead of friction decrease against efforts ,
>>flip the binary to friction becomes friend (not foe)as traction (unless free hang)!
Parbuckle is amazingly simple, minimal tool of aspects working so cleanly, simply in concert in taking purchase of rope from system to relaxed pool/bank, or paying it back out most smoothly and minimally.
Parbuckle can therefore be more than a pulley with less than a pulley!

Just such a semi-circular wooden affair was actually found in an Eqyptian tomb some years ago and finally recognized for the possibility of this use. I will see if I can track down the article and photo.

A round load in parbuckle can capitialize on continuous even motion,
but the squared cant's type roll gives rests in trade of loss of continuous motion when walking up ramps etc.
.
A half circle arc180 is mechanically a stroke to me, another completes the cycle;
as all these pieces come together to enforce a logic of if this, then that.
