Climber wanted for a small tree company in East Lansing, MI. Ellis Arbor Care is looking for a climber/crew leader. I worked for Collier in Portland, and Bartlett in AZ and Grand Rapids in my younger days, and founded Ellis Arbor Care in 2008. Our clients recognize and value our quality of workmanship.
Here is what I can tell you about Michigan after living here for nearly 8 years...
Michigan is a beautiful state with 3,300 miles of freshwater coastline. Nicknamed the Great Lakes State, it has also been endearingly called the great beer state as it is the number 5 state for most microbreweries behind CA, CO, OR, and WA.
Enjoy fishing for Steelhead, Salmon, and trout, in one of many rivers, or right out on one of the Great Lakes. Beautiful hardwoods here to climb. How about a 120' black cherry tree climb on one of MSU's old growth wood lots, traversing a descent through some tall, thin sugar maples nearby after admiring some gargantuan oak tops a few hundred feet away, which, of course, are also tempting to climb
. Sure, it's not as high as the Doerner fir back in my home state of Oregon, but it was pretty cool, and didn't take nearly as long to climb. Oh, and I love visiting Oregon, but always remember when I get back home to Michigan, that I can get in my truck any time of day, any day of the week and drive to any city without a traffic jam. Between that fact, the beauty of this state, and the affordable cost of living here, the quality of life is good. A buddy of mine, who's from Yakima, WA and lives here now calls this place the new west frontier.
Just in case you are into college basketball, this place buzzes with excitement as Tom Izzo always leads the Spartans to a great season. Unfortunately the U of M Wolverines, rivals, are an hour down the road in Ann Arbor, which I must admit, is actually a really cool city. I just try not to think about the Wolverines much when I'm enjoying visiting their great town.
Any day of the week there is an open farmers market somewhere in the Lansing area. Not bad for a city that's not too large. The three great farm-to-table restaurants in Lansing, very different from each other, are all hip, but not too Portland.
There are 4 distinct seasons here. When a cardinal lands on a hawthorn twig loaded with bright red berries set off by the surrounding white snow, It is winter. When thousands of tiny, purple, fragrant flowers light up the branch structure of a redbud not yet leafed out, in the comforting warming air, it is spring. When I spot two young foxes watching me in the evening twighlight on the bank while paddling down the red cedar river to relax after a work day, it is summer. When the foliage of a larch takes on that warm orange glow, after yellow, but before brown, and I want to somehow inhale it and make it a part of me, it is fall.
