High Climbers and Timber Fallers & Redwoods

Since Beranek had mentioned the Ravenwood motel in Klamath, I decided to try it out night before last. Very nice.

Two nights prior, I was looking online at his book High Climbers and Timber Fallers. And thinking about getting a copy next year. But was also curious about content. Well ... not curious anymore - LOL. Went across the street from the Ravenwood, and this "Little Jer" just happened to have copy overhead. Crikey ... there's reams of photos in that book. What a collection. Great piece of work "Big Jer".

Been itching to hike and stuff for a month. Held off for a decent forecast, and nailed-it. Probably the best 2 days in December. Blue skies for 2 days with a bit of popcorn clouds in the distance.

Chime in about High Climbers and Timber Fallers if you have a copy. That's why I put that photo in the first post.

That was Mill Creek Trail. Mill Creek was running full and a very nice blue color. Passed one man going down to look on the fish situation, although not for fishing that day.

Here's the room at the Ravenwood Motel.

If Big Jer is following this ...

Got a kick out of one pick with a tall extension ladder against one log.

Little Jer helped me get straight what a snipe was, and filled me in about the "scarf" if that's how its spelled.

The room shot was taken with a Fisheye lens. Otherwise, all the rest were with an Ultra Wide Angle 12-24mm mostly at the 12mm end. That lens slightly intensifies the blues.

Really like the way the wide angle got this root of a hemlock that was growing up on a huge trunk.

Passed through Eureka too. Someone in Eureka mentioned that Ferndale to the south, has the second tallest live Christmas tree at 150' after Idaho's 161' tree. They were curious if maybe Ferndale's tree might really be taller.

So we headed down and measured it. And .... it's 151.26 feet. Not enough to close the gap. But at least the 150' was not inflated. Anyhow, I had wanted to see Ferndale in the daylight. Last time, I came through at 2pm on my way to the Avenue of the Giants and it was too dark to really see much at all.

Now ... any of you ever seen something like this setup?

It really stood out. Parked at the Boy Scout Tree trailhead. Noticed a Canada maple leaf sticker on it, but forgot to look at the plates. This thing had a "not for hire - private RV" lettering on the side. And a big flip-down gate platform in the back laying open to expose the back door and some gear hanging there. This is about as big a box as a mid-size U-haul truck.

Pretty sure I've seen an F550 before, but never an F650. This is a Quad cab with extended cab.

This was the first or second of about 4 photos I took of these elk at Prairie Creek. They kept slowly inching along. And I inched along on the other side of the fence.

Just as I took the 4th photo, the elk on the left got irritated and faced me, then slowly walked at me and sort of made a hissing sound with its lips parted. So I kindly backed away and gave them their space.

It is a great book! I bought myself a copy this spring, and now both my employees are getting a copy for christmas. Lots of great pictures!

While I was at ordering some copys, I ordered a few extra, so I have a little to add at next years coming norwegian climbing competitions prize table.

Ive had the book a few years and the pictures and accounts are great! I would recommend the book highly, its a great look at the history of that area for logging.

Most of all though, the pictures are just ridiculous!

I too have two copies. The first edition and the second edition which has additional photos in it. By far, the best tree book that I own, personally autographed as well.

I am very grateful to Jer for taking the time to preserve the work of these incredible men and trees. He's the only one that I know of who recorded the passing of an era of old growth into second growth logging.

By the way, where's Jerry been lately? Haven't seen him on TreeBuzz for awhile.

md, thanks for posting the beautiful pictures in your thread. You live in a wonderful area of the country.

I have to get out there someday.

Anytime ...

Also, thinking about Chris Girard's reply about Beranek's whereabouts ... hope he checks into this thread, because I got "Little Jer" to pose with the book for an online hello.

The other "Jer" also had some of Beranek's videos and loaned those to me to take to the motel. My laptop played them and that made for an interesting late evening.

Ha, in my stomping grounds again, Mario. Really glad you took up on that recommendation of the Raven's Wood. Very clean place and right across the street from the Club. Burgers and beer is great there. Glad you had the opportunity to meet Lil' Jer. Heck of an old growth climber in his day, and still.

Chris, when you come out just give me a heads up and I'll set up a tour for you through some of the best trails. Plan on at least two years to hike and see them all. There's lots!!
