Hidden Costs of Having a Shop?

Diesel cost more off the truck unless you buy 2500 gallon at a time around here. Usually about 25 cents a gallon but still worth it for the time savings

Agreed! Off road delivered to my place is more expensive then at the pump. I stopped having them deliver after I argued with the fuel company an out road tax.

Mert grab yourself a transfer tank and deliver it yourself. BTW heating oil is identical to off road.
That is exactly what I did for a while, throw the tank in the truck and buy on road... then get the road tax back on my taxes. Then I bought this gas chipper and it no longer makes sense to have diesel at the house. I'm aware of the heating oil trick but in PA you don't pay sales tax (6%) on heating oil, but do on off road fuel. And they won't deliver to a tank that's not attached to the house. Sure I can play games, but it's an expense to the business and sometimes it's just not worth the semantics. :bailando:

RE: diesel deliver...
Might be area specific.
Might be old info from my friend who would split the couple hundred gallons with a friend down the road.
Might have been using the heating oil trick, too.
Dunno.

Be in compliance where your storage of pesticides, fuel, etc.. is concerned. The DEP will do an audit on your space and can advise you. The hidden costs of fines and retrofitting if you're inspected down the road is unnecessary and much more burdensome. When looking at space plan for the future. Is there enough room for future additions to equipment, employee parking, storage. This may be space you lease now, get an option on, or identify in the complex.

Phone and internet connections and equipment. Be sure the space you're moving to has high speed connectivity. Business internet is usually more money than home.

Few years ago we bought this 3 acre plot in an industrial park with a 100'x50' building. Worth every penny of the $1000/mo mortgage.
When we first moved in we wondered what we would do with all the space, now in the last year we are looking at building more structures.

We just moved our office from my home to our shop. Huge deal!!! Working on hiring an administrative assistant to keep up with the office work.

In acquiring and setting up the facility, we have sacrificed some short term momentum with respect to time and money, but I see it as a necessary foundation from which grow (10x's or more) from, in the next 5-10 years. There is no shortage of work, only the ability to handle it. Besides being able to handle the standard daily tree service routine efficiently, in the next few years we are expanding our operations to "reclaim our waste products" in the form of mulch/compost/lumber/finished wood products. We have a kiln in the building ready to go. Been hiring/trying out mills, going to buy one soon. A commercial high end wood worker is leasing 1200sq' in our facility, he drools over the fat logs sitting in the yard. Hoping in 15 years to mature into a climax operation with respect to equipment and services offered. The trees are not getting any smaller.

In the beginning it simply was a place to work on trucks and equipment at night and in the poor weather. Sooo much nicer then covering a truck with tarps, putting a salamander under it, using a head lamp while lying on a gravel driveway in the snow cause the fuel gelled up! Having a year round (plowed pavement!) dump spot where you keep your trucks is nice too!
