This is the procedure to follow if the avatar uploading hicks up.

1. Use this thread to post your avatar picture as an attachment.
2. When you've done that, open your own 'article' and click on the attachment.
3. The attachment opens and now you can see in the "address bar" (the place where you normally type a web address) the place where the picture is stored on the server. Copy this address.
4. Paste the copied address into the "URL to your avatar". Don't forget to mark the dot over the text "URL to your avatar" and to save it all by pressing the "submit button".

As you probably have seen in this thread, I've had the same problem and have used this trick already several times

thanks limbwalker, i dig your name, it sounds starwars-y...
i don't know them, yet.. most of my asheville friends are rock junkies, but i'm sure we'll cross paths eventually, asheville is a cool little place like that. and everyone i know from warren wilson is awesome.
