It’s been a funky late summer and now early fall for mushrooms etc. We went foraging yesterday in a favorite spot and searched for an hour, found maybe a handful of yellow foot chanterelles. No black trumpets or hedgehogs or Hericium. The chantys were only on the most shady and rotten logs instead of the patches/bands like usual. Dry dry dry this year

Lovely! Old and fresh sulfur shelf. I learned it first as Laetiporous sulfureus. That name is based on European collections which is likely a different fungus. So that genus is in the process of revision which has resulted (or will soon result) in a new name for the North American sulfur shelf. I defer to others (including my boss Dr. Dan Lindner) to make those calls.

That is what I have learned it as as well.... This name change stuff is especially hard on those of us that don't use them everyday!

I suppose if I was inclined to intentionally eat fungi, that log would have been an exciting find... We came upon the stump first - the log was a little turned and hidden so we didn't see it right away.

Just recently learned Platanus x acerfolia is now Platanus hispanica.

Depends who you talk to ( Angiosperm Phylogeny Group vs. USDA plants), the whole Aceraceae family is just gone! (Absorbed by Sapindaceae).

But it sure seems like mycologists move things around more than others. I suspect that is because they were historically not as well understood.

Strange nest I found in a concolor fir. Any ideas on what it is?

Try bold faced hornets nest. Don't know if that is what it is, but it sort of matches.

That looks right and what we initially thought but thought it was strange that it was vacant and also have never seen one like that.

When this happens, does it create a weak spot in the trunk? A friend has something similar in a maple, and I don't know if/what anything needs to be done. The tree is large and near his house.

Leave it, too cool and cutting would be avenue for rot. Whatever weakness there may be won’t be mitigated by cutting it.

I've never seen a hornet nest with the funnel shape....

I'm not saying it isn't... otherwise looks just like it and is identical to the one from @Shadowscape ...so I'm sure that's right. Just saying I've never seen one like it.
