Hello, New Guy Here

Hello Everyone,

I couldn't find any structured area or format for introductions, so here it is..

My name is Aaron and I'm currently a hobby climber / chainsawer / everything elser; doing some work around the house and for a few friends.

I started climbing last winter and removed a few trees that were in the way of a drainage project and helped out some friends with storm damage; I decided that I'm going to get back into climbing on a regular basis starting now. I noticed a bunch more trees around the house that are very sick and will have to come down, so as soon as my new ascenders arrive this week I'm going to hop in the saddle and get back into shape and then get back to work.

I'm looking to buy some real rigging equipment within the next couple months and a new saddle. I know what saddle I'm going to get (Buckingham Rebellion), but I'm not 100% sure on ropes yet... I'm going to get a couple whoopies and loopies and some decent blocks/rings before I get into the bigger stuff that needs to come down.

So with that said I'm open to any suggestions/guidance on what ropes are typically used for rigging and what lengths you guys normally use, and what blocks/pulleys are recommended.

So that's it I guess, Thanks!

Welcome Aaron. Search out interesting threads and you will find so much of what you want and more.

One thing I would say about rigging is that with the exception of long lifts or mechanical advantage for pulling, a rigger starting out today can do so much with X Rigging Rings, and that more enjoyably. Also 1/2 inch rope can do 90% of most peoples tree work.

I'm sure more will chime in with good perspective. Again, welcome.

Greetings, Aaron.
The little green ISC block is a real gem.
Merle is spot on re. 1/2" rope and X rings, imo.
And get yourself a Maasdam rope come-a-long if you don't have one already.

Looks good, what length rope do you guys typically run? I figure if the tree is 100ft tall: 200ft to go up and down plus another 50-100ft for ground guys?

200' is a reasonable length. ropes get shorter over time as the couple of feet takes a beating. A rigging rope of 175 - 180' is as long as I find necessary for the trees here. Sometimes 150' is adequate. Tag lines can be substantially shorter 60-100' as required.
You probably won't be working 100' trees very often. Sometimes, mebbe.

Welcome Aaron. Rope length will depend on your trees to some extent but 200 is a good starting place. I got both 150's and 200's since alot of my trees are only 40-60 ft tall. 200 is nice when you want to have a few redirects. With 100ft trees as the norm then you might want 300 but others will chime in on that. As far as what rope to choose will have some to do with your rigging style and the skill of your groundies. I have 1/2" 16, 9/16" Sirius, and 5/8" Allgear. Rings and the small blocks are nice, the new Omni blocks are also nice. Get yourself a rigging ring sling so you can set it from the ground to save some time and to stay out of unsavory trees.

Yeah... that's gonna take a while...

So in the mean time here's some bona fides...

That's me, I swear! ;)

I think I see the problem, already. In this picture it is snowing. And, there you are with your narrow ass up in a tree. You've completely missed the boat. You should be vacationing in the Bahamas whenever you see any sign of that white stuff, or if the temperature drops to the point where there is even a remote possibility of it happening. You can recover any expenses incurred by doubling or tripling your rates when you get back.

See how much nicer this picture is, compared to that ugly one of yours?

Get some books. To fell a tree, maybe something about knots, the Tree Climbers Companion book. There's others too that other people can suggest that are great.

Make a list, check em out, and purchase what you think would be relevant! Huge help!

Welcome Aaron. Good to see you're joining here. For rigging rope, I like a 200' 1/2" double braid. This gives you the ability to incorporate double blocks and redirects in most trees without coming up short. Use a rope bag for managing it.

BTW, there are other options to removal of "sick" trees.
