Hardhat Communications

I've been searching for an economical way to outfit two Petzl helmets for communications. They would be used for big crane jobs/training for new employees.

It seems to me there are no fairly priced 'ear-muff' types for sale. Most models are about $400+ and I would like to use the muff type to keep it self contained.

Anyone using something different that works? Who has found a set for a reasonable price? (besides yelling, haha)

I'm not that up on new technology as it changes every day. Is there something that would run through a cell phone to replace radios? Some app for a smart phone?

I know, like using it as a phone.

Or is there a headphone set up and mic that would work if you had two phones with unlimited minutes perhaps?
