Happy day

Today is our national day and in addition it is 100 years since we won our indipendence from Sweden. Great celebration like every year. This is most of all the childrens day with childrens parades all over the country. And thanks God, chemically free from military parades!
When are the national days of your respective countries and how do you celebrate?

Here, July 4th. Independance from??? I don't remember. I think it was also Sweden.

Now we shoot fireworks and have barbecue's in the back yard.

Maybe this year, I'll read the Declaration of Independence!

Hey treebear, I just spent a little while clicking through some pages after hearing about the "Russ" in this article (aftenposten.no) and "related stories" there. [ the harmless and surprisingly good video they talk about but don't link to is http://poststuff4.entensity.net/051605/strip.wmv ]

It sounds like the Russ celebration also ends on May 17? What's the difference between the red and the blue Russ, and which one were you?

Glen

Way back when I was young the celebration started may 15 after the final exams and lasted for a week or two. Nowadays school lasts until mid june so the russ celebration takes place the week besore the 17th and ends at the national day. The red ones graduates from a general high school, the blue ones from an economical high school, green from agricultural high school, black from mechanical high school. I was a red russ, we partied for two weeks and had great fun.

rupes got a point there mark....we just couldnt be arsed with the travelling anymore /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif perhaps we'll have a rematch someday now we have supersonic flight

Thanks for the explanation regarding the russ! Sounds like a good time for a (late) teenager. I wonder if it's open to all or if some kids are made to (further) feel like outcasts because of it.

I'd have to say that if I were younger and once again knew more, like teens always seem to do, that I could probably find some glaring physical faults with many of the girls shown in that series of articles (at aftenposten.no). Now that I'm slightly beyond double the age of the oldest person still known as a teenager, it sure seems as though your country is populated with women of very good stock!

So one goes to a high school depending upon what they'll (likely) be doing for a career? How is this decided? By "economical" high school, do you mean one where the students are from perhaps a lower-income family and they require assistance or is it one where they'll be entering the financial(?) sector of the workplace?

If the red russ primarily become tree workers it seems like there must be stiff competition in that occupation there (hahaha!).

I don´t think anybody is left out of the celebration due to the many colors of the russ.
I agree, Norwegian women are great ( don´t have a choice, I´m married to one.)
Yes, one go to college depending on what one is likely to choose as a career; reds are academic, blue are financial ( economical was directly translated fro Norwegian), black is mechanics and green agricultural.
Unfortunately in a way the number of red russ have nothing to do with the number of arborists in Norway. We are in many ways a developing country as far as treecare goes. On the other hand this makes our business very interesting and challenging since we now are laying the ground for future treecare in Norway.
My guess is that there are less than 10 certified arborists and twenty certified European Treeworkers around in a population of approx 4,8 mill people.
