Habits for Longevity in Arboriculture & Life

In my experience, the avoidance of things harmful or detrimental is of far greater impact than the adoption of things beneficial. I played around with adding beneficial things to my life for 20 years, e.g. diet , supplements, exercise regimens, etc, but for me, getting off the sauce and staying sober was worth more than all those things combined. Your mileage may vary, but I feel 10 years younger, at least...
A few drinks won’t cause you any harm.
Relaxes the body and mind.
Gives you a reward at the end of the day.

I am sober almost 19 years. Don't need rewards. My family in the evenings is my reward. Never missed drugs or alcohol. I feel free. But many love to have a few, that is also cool if you can manage that..... I certainly know mothing about moderation. I am all in....

No way I can wear those.
I feel that bruv; I gave up on wearing buffs a long while ago, but I wanna find something to try again. I like the idea of filtering out some bullshit. I got used to it when I did auto body work, as it felt really important after a while, seeing my boogers turning pink or blue. I don't always like wearing half the shit I wear, but it has all helped me.

Honestly buffs work great for me. Plus I am never using dull saws to no small particles. I feel the fit is not intrusive like a respirator. I have tried many low profile respirator type masks, hell no not happening. Feel clautraphobic.

Especially on sycamore days

Rare to see a sycamore in MN...but...fine particles, wood especially, is NOT good respiratory material.

I don't want to speak too loud about that group of unnamed 800# gorillas over there...but...my guess is that within a generation they will notice arborculture and address the atmosphere just like inside a production plant.

Even a doubled up buff worn bodega robbing style will filter some debris.

I've noticed sycamore is uncommon here. Good to know I won't be hacking and gagging over them any time soon.

I'd imagine so too.

Big one for me was reasonable hours and Mon-fri. This will still vary, and depend on the work. But my day to day is Mon-fri and an 8-9hr day. Really cut down from 7 days and 12 hour days most of the year. Of course it helps to be employed year round and no longer have the anxiety of light to no winter work.

Mental health is understated as a well being portion of our work. It's stressful work and you need a break to recoup. I don't miss the 7-12s either.

I wish dust only came from dull saws! Hollow old growth firs are nothing but a tube of dust, but I wore an N95 mask today for this remaining portion once I was no longer climbing and was then working in a semi enclosed space.

How tf can someone sustain even for a few weeks at 7 twelve hour days of tree work? That is pure madness. If it was like fishing where you made half a years income in a few weeks maybe,
Young and dumb. It's happened a few times over my career. Line clearance was even wilder when storms would hit. 36 on 8 off until the power is back on. Sleeping in trucks and running wide open.
