Groundsman Irrate Over Christmas Bonus Tax

So, one of my groundsman I give a Christmas bonus. He takes off Christmas week and the bonus keeps him afloat. So, bonuses are taxed at 22% to start off. Keep in mind he will get this back when he files. He does not understand this, he wants his money and is P/O'd. I get it. You want your money for Christmas now. Did not show up today and is being a Dick. I do not set up the tax rates. Should have paid him under the table I guess. Trying to be ligit.View attachment 72117View attachment 72117

22% seems high. You NY or Cal? There is a way to pay bonus salary with less (significantly) Federal withholding than regular payroll. Look into that. Of course will effect his refund/liability later on down the line, but that's his business.

Aren't taxes withheld from his regular check??? Why would he think this is different? Is he mad at you or at the tax man? If he is mad at you, I'd think hard about no bonus next year...not worth the headache to give somebody a gift then have to listen to them whine about you following the law!

Reaffirms my belief on taxes: employers shouldn't be forced to be tax collectors. Individuals should have to pay their own taxes.

When I used to get Christmas bonuses I would get a few extra hours on my check to where it came out close to the amount that the bonus was supposed to be. Taxes came out, it wasn't a big deal. Any money you get, that you technically didn't earn, is bonus.

In 41 years of working, I only got a Christmas bonus once, in the form of a season ski pass to the local ski hill - a generous $500 gift when my annual salary was only $10,500. These days I often work on Christmas, against my will, for no extra pay, sometimes stuck in a country where the Judeo-Christian religion and traditions are not practiced. Or here, but stuck in a hotel off an interstate exit with everything closed. Ever eat your Christmas dinner from a vending machine? (cue world's smallest violin)

Next year, give him a $500 gift card to Red Lobster and see how he likes that, then ask him why he wants you to stick your neck out breaking the law. Or tell him he's getting a $500 bonus but the check stub will say $650. He can use that $500 to hire a really crafty accountant to get him the other $150 by April. Meanwhile, dock him a day's pay for not showing up and ask him WTF he can't make it a week without cash.
