grizzly splice

just got the Sherril fall catalog and was curious if anyone has seen or used the new splice. looks a little bulky to me but they said its stronger than normal

Is this the splice you mean. Not too sure about the safety issue. I guess that might be why they put such heavy shrink wrap on it. As far as usage goes I love it so far. Less bulky than a double fishermans and doesn't stiffen the cordage like a conventional double braid splice would.

Great idea for hitch cords....not sure I'd like it on a climbing line.

I'm guessing if you snag/snip a couple of the threads that it'd still hold together. I only say this because in our line of work, it's inevitable that it will happen, and I'm sure sherrill understands this, and I know that wouldn't sell us something that had a good chance of breaking.

Here's some info on it from MB's house...

I got a chance to see the splice in Minnesota. The machine that does it pushes the rope together and has a set stitching pattern. Also the area that has been stiched is covered with the plastic tubing/shrink wrap stuff.

sounds like fancy "seizing"

Very well put, Rog. That's exactly what it is. A sewn seizing.

It's quite compact...you can't beat it in that aspect.

I only see one problem with it and that is having people look at it and think it's just where the rope is bent over and pushed together and then stitched. Then you'll have someone get out the needle and thread or sewing machine and start stitching up their own splices.

I've been using a Petzl Grillion lanyard (without Gri-Gri)for a 2-in-1 lanyard for about 6 months which has a similar stitched "splice" on each end. The molded plastic covers protect the stitching perfectly. I doubt that the shrink wrap will hold up as well.

Anyway, I trust the stitching, but I think I'll stick with a standard splice for my climbing line. The stitch-splice probably won't fit through the small ring on a friction saver. I want to try it for a split tail for reasons Murph mentioned above (less bulky and stiff).
