Grigri uses?

What have you found for the grigri useful for? I feel there's probably a lot I could be using mine for but it doesn't get out too often

I got one I am debating on marking for rigging use only. My thought is that it might work for light rigging with 11mm rope. I'm talking about another option for climber controlled lowering of a limb. This is just an unproven maybe as of right now.

Stick to the figure eight for that use, ML. IMO, the Gri Gri has no place for the tree worker. Research climbs for descending, maybe...

I think it could be implemented in a rads configuration for pulling a tree or sweating a line but really again there are better options...

Year's ago, I bought an original design Gri Gri as a lowerable base anchor. Would not use it for that now.
I believe that it was rated to start slipping at only 1000 #.

I would now use a D4, Mini (or full size) Port-a-Wrap, etc with a hitch cord back-up (or second mechanical).

Yes anything that is simple to train to use and will not run out rope if the rescuer is attacked by bees (or any circumstance where the user might have to let go). The Rig with its locking feature will not release rope even if hit by a falling limb or something (granted you would not want anything goes to fall near your base anchor...)

If you have experience on one, it can be used in a rads system. I don't plan a climb on it exclusively, but sometimes I'll be working one side of a tree DdRT, and I'll leave my tail end on the other side. I tie off my zig zag to a branch at the trunk, and can swing around to the other side SRT on the tail using the Grigio. A rig would be better since it locks, but it still does the job. Just stay conscious of the cam and keep it weighted.

I keep it on hand for climbers planning to free climb the branches of a conifer...I'll throw line a top rope system and belay the up the tree with the grigri while anchored from my bridge to another tree with my own flipline so a fall doesn't lift me off the ground...I'm on the light side.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I have heard no bueno to using it as a basal anchor before but don't quite get it...if it's backed up with an alpine butterfly, as in that loop from the butterfly knot is clipped to a biner behind the grigri, I just don't see what can go wrong, if the grigri even completely fails, I'm not falling.

If you do that, you're right. You won't fall.

However.

If/when you slack off your SRT line, the grigri will gradually feed line until that stopper knot is jammed up against the grigri. Now, the knot can't be untied to allow you to be lowered without pulling tension off the knot, which means your groundie has to lift your weight while fighting the friction of all of your natural redirects and the grigri itself just to untie it.

I use mine as progress capture for tensioning a zip line. Also for spar positioning ( occasionally ) as a GTFO device.
