One of the big issues that we had with the GRCS and Rigging lines getting badly pitched up on this particular job that Porter is talking about, was the fact that the line wouldn't self-tail and when we took our eyes off of it for a moment while cranking up a big 10' piece, the line wrapped itself around and underneath the winch, effectively locking itself on the winch.
I was up in the Pine tree at the time and what I had to do to relieve the tension off the GRCS, was to set a prussic on the rigging line, set up the rope come along at the base of the tree, run a line up to the prussic and crank down on the rope come along to relieve the strain off the GRCS. It worked fine and afterwards we had the other ground worker hold the end of the line where it feeds through the self-tailer to keep an eye on it. This wreck job was a real pitchy mess and basically ruined my climb line, friction hitch cords (2 of them) and a 180’ double braid rigging line. I’ll give them a couple of washes, but I know it won’t do all that much good.
Any of you guys have similar experiences with your GRCS getting gummed up from the rigging line while winching a load up or down and having a problem with it self-tailing afterwards?
