GRCS

One of the big issues that we had with the GRCS and Rigging lines getting badly pitched up on this particular job that Porter is talking about, was the fact that the line wouldn't self-tail and when we took our eyes off of it for a moment while cranking up a big 10' piece, the line wrapped itself around and underneath the winch, effectively locking itself on the winch.

I was up in the Pine tree at the time and what I had to do to relieve the tension off the GRCS, was to set a prussic on the rigging line, set up the rope come along at the base of the tree, run a line up to the prussic and crank down on the rope come along to relieve the strain off the GRCS. It worked fine and afterwards we had the other ground worker hold the end of the line where it feeds through the self-tailer to keep an eye on it. This wreck job was a real pitchy mess and basically ruined my climb line, friction hitch cords (2 of them) and a 180’ double braid rigging line. I’ll give them a couple of washes, but I know it won’t do all that much good.

Any of you guys have similar experiences with your GRCS getting gummed up from the rigging line while winching a load up or down and having a problem with it self-tailing afterwards?

I have had lots of luck with Tecnu poison ivy cleanser. YOu can use it on your clothing and tools acording to the bottle. I have used it on a lanyard once and it worked ok. Works best on a solid surface not porus. Should do the trick.

CMT, an Italian woodworking company that manufactures blades and router bits makes a harmless citrus based pitch cleaner that works wonders. It even breaks down pitch that has been baked on by a hot blade or friction. Spray it on and watch the resin slide off. Gas is always handy though

Do you think that this producr could be safely used on your climbing and rigging lines to clean off pitch too?

I tried to find some CMT over at The Home Depot at lunch time, but they just looked at me like I had two heads. They've never heard of the stuff.

I guess I'll have to order it over the internet and give it a try.
