Couldn't find a thread about this but maybe I missed it. How are you protecting your heavy equipment and trailers.

Anybody using GPS devices?

How about Lojack?

Other systems or mechanical devices for attachments?

I'm not sure the company name but we have it in the trucks so our nosie secretary can track us (none of the owners cared that they didn't know exactly where we were...) but it's a very simple thing to wire in, Keyed power, constant power, and ground. It's the size of a deck of cards they charge like 15 or 20 bucks a month per truck. I think we got a deal on it cause we had decided against it but the guy wanted business and we did 12 trucks we pay some where around 150 a month. You track it via their website and is pretty accurate I'd say to within 100 feet. That would work with anything with a battery but wouldn't really be good for a trailer. We don't have them on the chippers or stumpers, not sure how the tracker box would survive with the vibration and heat from a chipper or stumper. I can get the info on the company this week.

What I have noticed so far is that they are all expensive and require monthly plans. If you have equipment without batteries the selection is even smaller.

Maybe check out DNA tagging. You'd have to see if this suits your need. We used them for IT security. It doesn't need battery but there's no tracking. Just YouTube search 'DNA security spray'

Basically you spray the item(s) with a unique signature. It gets everywhere. If it's stolen and found it can be traced to you. Also, depending on how it's used, the DNA gets on the crims and the police would pick up on this. The main deterrent is good signage on the equipment you're protecting.

Image the conversation when a cop says to a crim they have monkey love DNA on them.

Chains and locks are deterrents, too, and no monthly fee.

I chain my saws together in the truck, and any other power equipment I can reach with the chain. I will add a cable loop that the chain can go through, which will be attached to the truck bed.

Portable angle grinders will cut through whatever. Cause them to make noise and take time. Avoid pry-open and grab.

I always thought good signage meant both Hey Potential customers, and Hey Potential Thieves.

I have this product for the chipper. Anytime it is left unattended on a job or in my yard this goes on. Unfortunately this day and age anti theft devices only keep the honest ones honest. If they want your stuff they will take it, no matter how many fancy locks, chains and GPS' you buy.
The one thing that concerns me almost more than theft is vandalism, especially of the fuel systems of my equipment. Someone could pour something in the tank and it would take a while to diagnose what is actually wrong. Any of my equipment that can have a locking fuel cap gets one to prevent the hassle.

I be a dumb dumb here's the link:

And yet probably not even 5 min with a battery powered cutoff and it's laying on the ground...

Correct! But as I said it only keeps the honest individuals honest. If someone wanted my chipper or trailer they could take it, even if attached to the truck, any number of locks, chains or even taking the tires off. The industrious individual would find a way to steal it. That's why I pay a fortune for insurance!

Lojack is an option also but that runs you about 800-1k to have installed. But as we all know they all just keep honest people honest.

Any updates for this thread about tracking devices for equipment and vehicles? Anyone happy with those Milwaukee devices? Seem to have a lot of bad reviews.
