If only people respected the skirts of trees.
A tree's beauty is universally acknowledged, so should be the conscientiousness and importance of what is underneath it: shade, plants, soil, roots, and the potential landing zone of branches, leaves, flowers and seeds. The skirt IS part of the tree. Respect the skirt.
If it were my land, I would remove one of those sweetgums every few-several years (starting with the most problematic) and immediately replace with a suitable species, to be pruned and coaxed into becoming a healthy, strong, and well-structured old tree (thus creating an educational opportunity for the children to learn about the environment and good stewardship)
Forget that. Have the kids collect the fruit and use them for arts and crafts. I just found out how to make wreaths, reindeer, mice, and christmas tree decorations (individually or strung together). The possibilities are endless and it encourages not only the kids, but the ADULTS to think in creative ways and make the most of what god gave us.
btw... the going rate is $3.25 for a dozen!
