Gettin' up in the morning

You know when you look at your gear and you think to yourself "hmmm my total-super kit would be complete if I just had this one thing" and then it never stops.

That is what gets me up in the morning and keeps me going in the blistering heat.

.... that and supporting my family I guess....

gear junkie for life.

Hey folks, what do you say to yourself in the morning when you've just come off a 12-hr day, or the weather sucks, or you're beginning to feel sick and you just gotta go to work? Curious about how different people handle that moment.

This morning, I felt pretty rough and I was thinking, "Okay, dude. A badass would get coffee and go kick ass. So are you a badass or a dumb ass?" That worked pretty well.

What do you do?

This mourning I got up drank coffee and watched leathal weapon 2 on Netflix. Way better than tree work, that shit is hard

Right on, Steve. Good for you.

Once in a while I get my butt kicked by food poisoning and that shuts me down for a day or two. Bad dairy and I don't agree at all. Aside from that, I usually find a good day with burn out any oncoming sickness.

Overall, I just switched to working 4x10s. Generally it's great. But a long day on top of 10 hours gets REALLY long. That was me yesterday. Punched out at 11.75 hours, finishing the day with a 3.5-hr technical removal. Felt pretty creaky this AM. But it's all good.

Another day at the office. Here's my view.
CBach, nice shot--paulownia and golden robinia...shot from above I-90. You're in my hood, not Denver, eh?

I don't believe we know each other? Come to the July 27 Wa TCC in Volunteer Park..or contact Justina (Champion Tree Care) to volunteer. I'll be there as the photographer.

Working all weekend so as to be ready to leave ASAP to Vancouver Is for a photo safari vacation... have two different competent climbers working, one each day, to fill out the crew. Lake Union today and Skyway tomorrow.

Do you have one Levi? I've been thinking about it quite a bit lately. I can handle the heat pretty well but I'm wondering if I can keep my energy levels up for a few more hours with one.

I do not have one, Rich. I decided I was too young. But now that I am aware of their existence I feel I have no right to complain about the heat.

I don't drink coffee or any other caffeinated beverages to get moving. I just get up, eat a good breakfast, hydrate all day with water, and feed the body good quality food. That's my secret. And I'm a contract climber so I set my own schedule and make sure to have plenty of rest days on the calendar as well as visiting a massage therapist every other week and chiropractic as needed.

Ryan, you have it going on--fit as a fiddle fo sho. I'm just like you, except I don't sleep enough.... shooting thousands of images a month lately, and then editing... and preparing for another photo safari, this time to Van Is west coast and more...Sunshine Coast --Powell River if I get that far and have time....but, due to the sleeplessness, when I travel, I caffeinate to keep on the right side of the road.....
Only drink it occasionally otherwise....

I don't get massages or visit a chiro, but am in dire need...after getting whacked in the nose a couple months ago when I misjudged what a hung tree was going to do (butt was impaled in the ground, mid tied with a less than ideal line angle. Chipper winched it out of terra firma, but the winch wasn't fast enough. Wouldn't have been a problem if I'd been behind the porta wrapped tree. Robert was on the winch, and his mom, Catrina was filming.... She was instantly bawling, at the sight of me getting whacked and bloody. Had to tell the 911 operator that I was fine (I really wasn't) but I Wraptor'd up in the rig tree, and pulled the block... 20 minutes later, we were cleaned up and done, while my nose dripped a bit of that red stuff.

Since then, I'd had a stiffer than normal neck, and occasional slight tension headaches...and a runny right nostril--think the septum was damaged a bit... now I'm both deviant and deviated....

Check out Robert's Creek beach when you are on the Sunshine Coast. At low tide in the summer it is a great place. And the Gumboot Cafe for food. I love that place.

Thanks, Oroboros....I think and hope I'll have time to hit the north and south sections of the SS Coast.... have an old college classmate to visit there, and would like to find Gord, who used to post here now and then. He, and his family company, are very competent climbers and loggers.

Something else that came to mind yesterday about this thread is why we get up and get moving. Over my years of doing tree work I've met lots of people. To some this work is just a job, and to others it is their passion. Some are living a life they love and are following their heart, and others are following societal norms, familial expectations, and what they feel they "should do". When I started living my life the way I wanted to and stopped living for those other reasons, my work became my passion, and my attitude and motivation changed exponentially.

Look more at why you are working so hard and perhaps the motivation will come more from within.

When I was younger I had trouble getting going in the morning. Now the alarm goes off and I'm up and running (sometimes after I hit the snooze button!). I'm rarely sick and long days don't bother me. If I feel sick then I make a decision, will it be better to take a day to get over it or will working be just as good? As for weather, I don't control that. We will work or we won't. Often that call is made the day before or that morning.

Now, I just wake up at 5-5:30 everyday.

I'm not the OP, by after a few days in the heat, just going at a steady pace and not over doing it, and drinking water as much as I can as often as I can, it's not too bad. Certainly isn't a lack of love for what I do.
