'Cactus' Ed Abbey was challenged for his seemingly hypocrisy of save Mother Earth and driving one of the biggest sleds of energy consumption. Plenty to read about this backstory via Google.
One 'justificatiion' I read of his was that the sooner oil/hydrocarbons were gone the sooner humans would be able to break through and reach the next level. I never bought that plan but from a creative, artistic stance, I can sorta grok what Ed was talking about.
At my low level I do what I can. Use fewer energy units when I can.
I lived in good grip of my life time in an trailer. Yeah , I'm a first generation trailer trash that you can call me that. LoL . Back then owning a motorhome, trailer is only for wealthy people. It still is but I was very lucky my uncle left me saying " You were born in a trailer so you'll die in a trailer ... keep my motorhome well taken care of it . Here is the key. Get out of here ... " like that. Tbh, getting motorhome for free was great but it was an torture chamber ... an iron maiden...being in there lmao !!!
Where I have no access of water or gas, sewage even . I regularly took shower like once in a week. That was normal at that time . I used about 7 gallon of fresh water each time to take shower that I remember.
I have to walk down to buy water from local water vending machines...
It was enought to shampoo, body wash , rinse my hairs and body altogether. Summer, winters all very cold freezing temp shower of hell.... coz it came out of water refrigerator vending machine lol
I did my laundry like once a month. With good old wavy laundry board with bare hands and brick laundry soap. I even remember making my own soap with old cooking oils as well.
Cooking food in stove was one of those typical canister gas stove top. My motorhome had one stove but there is no gas available most of times in a propane tank that I gave with my motorhome so ....
That stove cooked soap , leads for fishing, all kinds of stuff ...
it was my lab and kitchen equipment al all together. Lol
I don't clean pan at all but brush off all the food debris then wipe off with oil. Yup , simple old cast iron pan that I've got from thrifty store .. . I remember that it was pristine condition back then but it's seriously old pan . I think it was from around good ol gold rush era .
Obviously , I had no refrigerator to save food so , i relied on "when I get them I'd eat them all before it spoils " approach. Once a day meals. mostly, fasting but drinking water or teas.
That life style over a decades saved so much CO2 footprint for sure.
So , now I do have all the access to its luxuries but I still tend to not to use it so much. Now I take a bath instead of showers .
Ohhhh taking a bath ... Such a luxury ...lol
I don't use any common water heater tank but uses instant water heater. Its Hot water on demands. So saves hell of propane gas .
I still cooks stuffs on canister gas stoves tho .
I also have that famous green suitscase style Coleman dual fuel gas stove top & wood stoves for its back up in case I have no gas available.
When I want to shred some important documents I'd just visit my next door when they are going to do bbq help them start fire and burn all that unwanted papers.
When I have unwanted plastic bottles is just give them to homeless people who collects them . They asks me money then I give them empty bottles.
Sometimes , when I'm walking near by some wealthy people's house I have an urge to jump into that such an waste water sprinkler systems...lol seriously ... I ready do .
Obviously, I would not take a shower with someone's sprinkler systems but in a past I really did tho ...LoL
I do see so much waste all around us.
