friction saver

Very cool Moss! I’ve been trying to do different techniques for this situation for years, and this one seems the best . I think I might make one of those grapnels out of a filed down bunker snagger.
Moss would you be up for a rec climb this fall?

Send me a PM, I get out to western Mass regularly to climb, also some good tall whites outside of Hartford, or if you have a location to suggest.

Cool, glad you like the visuals anyway :-) We should have a climb day in October, maybe we can get a few other CT climbers in the mix. Think of a day that works, weekend of 10/17 is out for me but the rest is yet to be scheduled. Would be good to get away from domesticated trees and into the woods. My Hartford area location would be good but if anyone comes up with some big woods or river trees anywhere in CT I'm all ears.

The grapnel is a new design from New Tribe, made in the USA. It grabs throwline real nice and resists getting snagged in branches, worth every penny.

Nice contraption Moss.

Thanks for the grapnel diagram.
That could be very useful for setting tip-ties from the trunk of the tree!

I posted up some video in the Rec Climbing section showing the FootShot and grapnel technique in use in a tree:

Nice! Great technique, thanks for sharing.

Pretty much gone to straight leather cambium saver. Personaly dont see a need for a grapel. Go a little lower. Jump over. Loop a lanyard long. Footlock mainline. 3 or 4 locks. Pull over. Move up lanyard. Repeat. Stop when done. Retrieve and move line as required. Gotta use Something. Im gratefull to take the rings right out of the equation.

One bad ash, You never cause friction do ya?

LOL Nope haven't even started YET! AND the kid is gettin' married this weekend so.......!

PS All I grew this year was Canary Seed! It is itchy, and friction is the enemy with THAT stuff!

Definitely, the rig I was testing in the video is for situations where the trees are too far apart to make the jump. Or there is some obstruction that blocks the move. Most real-world work situations, what you describe is it.

Maybe i was abit presumptive. I had not seen your vid. How much cussing have you done with the grapel? Your footshot rocks. I would prefer it recreationaly where i am not pressured by production requirments if it gets all tangled etc. You look very peacefull in your pursuit. good job!

With that design grapnel, very little cussing, the previous NT design (trad grapple shape) more cussing. The "Yella" grapnel is super high percentage grabbing a line and it doesn't want to get hung on branches like the old design did.

If you're in a hardwood for instance and you want to quickly set a second TIP to move horizontal either in the tree or to another, I think it's practical, depends on the situation and how many impatient people are on the ground tapping their feet.

I think the footshot could be useful for research/expedition climbers who are already doing tree-to-tree moves in tall conifer wilderness settings, it could be a big help. I think right now they're using crossbows to fire fishing line or dragging Big Shots up into the tree.

Part of it was I just wanted to see if it could be done. When I'm rec climbing in the woods I'm always looking at the next tree over and thinking, "I want to go there!". When conditions are just right I can do it with a hand throw or a favorable setting and a swing but lots of time its no go without another way.

Thanks for your comments.

For advanceing through the tree on my way up I'm a big fan of the leather tube cambium saver instead of a FSbut either way in a treee a overhand knot will retrieve both. Swinging to another section and climbing high then lanyard in and remove and rest is a good way to go. If your going to another tree this is a bit differnt but get your groundie to set a throw line in the crown for you then you can set your line and swing away. Or your groundie can set another FS and climbing line you pull it up and away you go then he can remove the last one for you next tree and so on or you can retrive it your self when you get down. Good luck try a few see what works for you.

I absolutely LOVE the graphnel idea. Wished I knew about it this summer.I was working a stand of 80-90ft pines that were an average of maybe 20-25ft apart tried a few attempts at making a "claw" like the heliloggers use but not much sucess and couldn't find somone to detail one to me. this is killer!
