I'd start with 8mm prussic cord-- HRC, 8mm Beeline, 8mm Ocean Polyester. etc. Buy 5' and use scaffold hitches (double fishermans knots); try tying it different lengths to get your knot just right.

Definitely try a Distel, it's a really good hitch to start using with an eye-eye prussic. You may want to move to something else later but it's a good knot if you're under 200#.

If you'd rather go with a single eye prussic, go with the Blakes, best single eye knot ever.

Try'em low and slow and tune on the number of wraps.

Save the VT for later, it's a great knot but you need to have the system down pat before you start playing with a knot that won't necessarily set automatically.
