Footwear

So I had a question come up and after some discussion I could not find anything from OSHA or ANSI that dictates footwear. Other PPE ya. Anyone have any conclusive info?

I remember from my tech school that any boot that was above the ankle was acceptable. As far as steel toe I believe it is up to the employer.

ANSI-Z133.1-2006: Section 3.4.4; Cloting and footwear appropriate to the known job hazards shall be approved by the employer and worn by the employee.

Is somewhat of a gray area, but is addressed and the burden is placed on the employer to determine exactly what the known job hazards are. In this industry where the actual job site changes every day one would, I suppose, have to anticipate the most hazardous situation and then approve the appropriate footwear. Seems to me that high top tennies would be out no matter what.

I don't think this is gray at all. Protection from falling or rolling objects. HMMMMMM, let's see what could that be? There is a reference to ASTM and ANSI minimum standards. Let's face it steel toes are needed since both those types of hazards exist. Electrical shock hazard is another. It can be argued convincingly that it exists.

If a worker suffers a foot injury from a piece of wood or equipment falling or rolling on his foot where do you think OSHA will stand on this? I wear steel or aluminum toed boots everyday on the job, climbing or not.

Why do we persist in trying to interpret some sort of minimal protection or none at all when we can see readily the potential for injury? People complain about being over legislated and that business will do the right thing but, that is not what I hear or see on a daily basis.

What do you think constitutes proper personal protective gear in light of the potential hazards?
