Footlock Rope

I went to the penndel east contest today and a snakebite rope was used for secure footlock. I asked the judge if this was okay at all tcc contest I was given a firm "yes" on the matter. (thank you mr roach)

Can I alter a footlock rope used in a comp? Could I coat the whole thing in maxijacket coating if I wanted?

I've seen people velcro or electrical tape the bottom to keep the ends together. Could you take that a step further and and maybe join the two sides of the rope together permanently as long as the prusik still functioned 100%?

Hey Nick,

I don't know if this is a secret or not. I hope not, but Jesse from APS gave me a good tip of tying a fisherman's knot at the end, making the 2 sides of rope really close. (Thanks Jesse!!)

Also, Bishop Co has a new rope out from Yale. It's the Limelite 24, 11.7mm. I know that makes it a little heavier, but I believe it is made of material that still makes it pretty light. Plus, I heard that if it's thicker, that it actually helps you grab more with your feet.
What's great is that it really is super tight with less give. I plan on using it at our TCC. Although I won't be lightning fast, I do hope it helps improve my time from last year.

Check out Bishop's website for more info on this rope:

a guy at the nationals here last year stitched his 2 sides of rope together and that was allowed, took him a couple of hours to do the night before apparently. cant remember how it got installed but it looked pretty quick and seemed easier to use.

Tieing the ends together is a good tip. The knot adds just a little weight too. Another way to add weight is to put a loop of cord/throwline on a throwbag. Girth hitch the bag to the bottom of the line. Even though it adds just a bit more weight to the rope this seems to keep the two ropes pulled tightly parallel to each other for the climb.
