foot ascender

I've had the Pantin for several years and it is good, however CMI has put their own on the market in the last year and a half or so. CMI has both right and left foot models so you can get one for your strongest leg. They are a little beefier than the Pantin and they have a little stud that allows you to secure it to and remove it from the rope with your opposite foot. The same part secures the cam to the rope. With the Pantin, if you don't hold your foot just right, the rope will slip out of the ascender. Most guys use a mini biner to keep the rope engaged. With both being about the same price, the CMI seems a little better. I don't climb without them.

It is not correct that the Pantin only works on one foot. You can ware it on either foot. I always heard that it only works on your right foot but it works equally as well on your left foot.... it is just backwards. For those of you who have one, try putting your left toe where your right heal normally goes. I have never used the CMIs but they look too bulky for my liking. Personally I really like the Pantin and I think it gets a bad shake by people sometimes.

I have the cmi foot ascenders. Nice and work great and only 55 bucks. They are however a bit bulky and a little heavier but it is nice to engage/disengage using only my foot and they do not open like the pantin because they are a closed cam.

Get the Petzl unless you have issues with your right leg. I don't know why they don't do a left leg version as I disagree that it works as well on that side. I never use my CMI. It's overbuilt and a bit clumsy for its purpose. Too many opinions?

I got an email from Petzl regarding left foot pantin...

Our current model of Pantin, is only intended for use with the right foot. However, we are excitedly anticipating the new left-footed Pantin that will launch in mid January 2009. Please feel free to check out our dealer locator at www.petzl.com to help locate a dealer closest to you. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Sincerely,
Petzl America

It kind of PO's me with Petzel. About six years ago I called them and asked them to consider a left foot version of the Pantin. They just blew me off. Now that CMI has theirs out, they are coming out with one. It's like feedback from the field doesn't count. Just venting,

I've got the CMI right and left foot. I like them except for the webbing fluffs out and it makes it difficult to adjust on and off the foot.

I saw the proto-type of the new Petzl right and left foot ascenders and the Rocky Mountain Chapter TCC. They look compact and much better than CMI's.

So, Treehawk. Save some money and get the new Petzl right and left foot ascenders.

Meh... foot ascenders are for wusses!

I was just trying to get a rise out of Roger. But yep, the more you climb and learn to strat using gravity instead of fighting it, the less work it seems to be... or rather, the less tiring it is anyway.
