Going back to your original picture...

I see the brown line on the left. It disappears off the bottom of the pic. At the top, I see a knot, not sure what knot, and a screw link. How does the brown rope terminate? What's the purpose of the brown rope?

I may be out of line here (sorry Todd), but it looks real similar to my system so I'll give you my answer. The brownish rope connecting to the bottom of the handled ascender is your connection to that ascender. You terminate it to your harness while you ascend, and then I unclip it and clip it to my ascending line (slip knot) as a third stage backup. Does that clear it up?
